There are two kinds of reading: spontaneous and systematic. Spontaneous reading is when you unexpectedly discover a book and are drawn into the world. Systematic is when you decide exactly what you are going to read. For example, if you decide you are going to read all of Hemingway’s short stories. Both types are important for becoming a better writer. Both will teach you things.
