"Justice is what love looks in public. just like tenderness is what love feels like in private." - Cornel West
CW for medical bullshittery (yeah I don't think much of naturopaths and if you do I'm sorry this isn't a post for you) So I was reading this passage from some naturopath's website and I was hit with a revelation I cannot stop thinking about.
"In his book Toxic, Nathan describes unconventional strategies which he believes reboot the healing cycle. For the nervous system, which is central to hypersensitivity, Nathan recommends strategies like osteopathic manipulation, Frequency Specific Microcurrent, the Dynamic Neural Retraining System (DNRS), acupuncture and strategies which augment vagal nerve function to name a few. He also addresses other body systems which need rebooting including the immune system, the gastrointestinal system, the metabolism, the methylation cycle and the body’s ability to detoxify. Dr Nathan’s approach is holistic, all encompassing. In addition to rebooting the body he discusses strategies to better manage stress, awaken emotions and seek spiritual growth.
Nathan’s approach is to work with individuals based on the bio-psycho-social-spiritual model – healing the entire being. It can be complex for people who have been ill for years or decades. Toxic generates hope through real examples from his practice that we can all improve to some degree." [emphasis mine]
Ah yes. Holistic, all encompassing care that is still somehow wildly individualistic.
And THIS, my friends, is what has been bothering me about alternative medicine for years but I couldn't figure out why. It's all systems this and environment that, but they only mean it in a personal way. Your body's systems. Your house. The food you eat. The supplements you take.
Where is the community care? Where is repairing broken SOCIAL systems, like poverty, racism, patriarchy, corporate greed? Why are naturopaths all about holistic care until holistic care involves more than just the patient?
I likely have MCAS. Stress makes MCAS so much worse, but nearly all of the resources I've read about managing MCAS have to do with personal ways of reducing stress (eg vagus nerve stuff like breathing exercises) and personal treatments. But imagine if MCAS patients had community support.
