"Rich Man and Lazarus (after Fyodor Bronnikov.)" "I know many religious individuals who picture heaven as a place devoid of borders, social classes, money, private property, or sufferingâ a realm where everyone's needs are met. However, these same individuals often describe the concepts of social justice and a social state as evil. The irony in that is striking."

How much is a billion? A billion is 1,000,000,000 (one thousand million), consisting of a 1 followed by nine zeros. It's an unimaginably large amount. A billionâthat's an incredibly huuuuge number! To put it into perspective, a billion seconds is about 31.7 years. That takes us to the second half of 1994, when the Western Allied troops and the Russian armed forces officially withdrew from Berlin after almost 50 years. A billion minutes is roughly equivalent to 1,902.6 years. This brings us back to the year 124 AD, a time when Emperor Hadrian, a notable patron of Greek culture, reigned in Rome. Unfortunately, this period also saw the Second and Final Jewish War. When we look at a billion hours, it translates to about 114,155 years. This era was around the time when Neanderthals were migrating through Central Europe. Meanwhile, in Africa, Homo sapiens were moving northeast toward the Near East. A billion days is approximately 2,738,000 years. This is the time of early hominins. For example, Homo habilis, who already used stone tools. One billion weeks corresponds to approximately 19.18 million years. Europe was covered by Parathetis, a vast sea. The Alps were in an intense phase of orogeny. In Africa, the first early forms of hominoids (Hominoidea) developed, such as Proconsul. And what happened a billion years ago? That's when the first multicellular organisms, like microalgae, emerged. These are enormous numbers and timescales. Wait. What was my point? Oh yes. The USA also boasts enormous figures. They rack up debt in record time. On average, one billion dollars in about 3 hours and 10 minutes. Let that sink in and give it some thought. Much obliged.
âThe ultimate test of a moral society is the kind of world that it leaves to its children.â â Dietrich Bonhoeffer

"Education costs money. But then so does ignorance." - Claus Moser
"Why did god create atheists?" A story by the Austrian-Jewish philosopher Martin Buber. A Rabbi is teaching his student the Talmud and explains god created everything in this world to be appreciated, since everything is here to teach us a lesson. The clever student asks âWhat lesson can we learn from atheists? Why did god create them?â The Rabbi responds âGod created atheists to teach us the most important lesson of them all â the lesson of true compassion. You see, when an atheist performs an act of charity, visits someone who is sick, helps someone who is in need, and cares for the world, he is not doing so because of some religious teaching. He does not believe that god commanded him to perform this act. In fact, he does not believe in God at all, so his acts are based on an inner sense of morality. And look at the kindness he can bestow upon others simply because he feels it to be right.â âThis meansâ the Rabbi continued âthat when someone reaches out to you for help, you should never say âI pray that god will help you.â instead for the moment, you should become an atheist, imagine that there is no god who can help, and say âI will help you.'â
