ATLANTIC OCEAN (January 17, 2020) -- A T-45 Goshawk, assigned to Air Test and Evaluation Squadron (VX) 23, conducts flight operations aboard brand-new United States Navy supercarrier USS Gerald R. Ford's (CVN 78) flight deck....in this minute-long video demonstration.
The aircraft carrier -- the lead ship of the Ford-class of aircraft carriers -- is currently conducting Aircraft Compatibility Testing to further test its Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch Systems (EMALS) and Advanced Arresting Gear (AAG).
Both systems are at the core of what makes a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier a uniquely powerful instrument of foreign diplomacy, or, of course, warfare, when circumstances dictate.
Accordingly, note the absence of steam escaping the catapult system as the aircraft is launched. Here, an F/A-18F Super Hornet roars skyward....riding an electromagnetic rail.
The era of the steam catapult on American aircraft carriers is coming to an eventual end. This is a new generation of catapult launching and arresting gear systems....and USS Gerald R. Ford (CVN 78) is tasked with working out the almost unavoidable kinks (and there have been plenty) in such a complex new system of systems....and ensuring their sustainability and reliability in a broad spectrum of training and wartime conditions.
