normally a new resident of the zone is met with much apprehension, including from ophelia. it isn’t easy to trust people around here, and newcomers from the outside can be from anywhere. when whispers passed around about the incoming face being from wyoming, of course the fear and rumors spread. but ophelia sees a different side of things within the infirmary. she sees a boy in pain. she sees her brother come in every day to sit at his bedside. that means something to her. as soon as gil tells her of their past, even if it was in fragments, there is no question of her trust. gabe is good- more than good. he has a new ally in her.
as her shift ended she begins to close up shop. she takes off her apron that helps to protect her scrubs from the goings on of the infirmary and prepares the materials for the next medic. before she leaves, she stops by gabe’s bedside, greeting him with a warm smile. “how are you feeling?” she asks, tucking a bit of hair behind her ear. “i’m heading out but i wanted to stop by before i did and make sure you’re doing alright, did you need anything?” she speaks soft and tenderly. she wants him to know that she’s there out of a genuine want to help, not because he is any sort of burden. “also, i have a small surprise,” she reaches into her bag and pulls out a small jar of fresh strawberries. they’re small and a bit misshapen, a few aren’t as ripe as others. slowly she unscrews the lid and sets them on the table next to him. “our secret,” she whispers with a small giggle. “it’s so early for them but low and behold, a few sprung up in our garden. we thought the storm would have washed everything away but, it seems like these little guys didn’t want to give up. they held strong, reminded me of you,” ophelia smiles. “they’re all yours if you want them.”
