In the Dark of Wonder
60,000 thoughts a day from ancestors— heavy, like carbon compressed by the weight of earth, my spine shaped into diamonds. In my bedroom, hundreds of shadows— light sourced from a void so deep it slows time, sprinting on wind’s infinity. I can listen all the way to the edges of the universe—it whispers everyday is a day closer to never being in this body again. Humanity is a giant museum…
We Were Stuck in a Long Goodbye
I fell into a deep sleep, couldn’t get up off the couch— like I had ass magnets. Stagnant blood pooled into scum-filled ponds in my hips and knees until it hurt to move, walk, rest. Life heavier— couldn’t climb up steps, even my cells were depressed. But there is energy in pain. Like the knotted tree roots twisted, bulging up in the parking lot, I can slowly move— stretch my aura like silly…
My Love is an Assassin
needing a nemesis, just a single person to hate— he says. True crime shows—murders, suicides— his lullabies, while triple distilled whiskey and cigarettes snuggle him to sleep. He wakes from a caravan of dreams he knows he had but can’t remember; slips on skinny jeans, leather loafers and a crisp sport coat, always the color of light. On a good day his hair is spiked— a feathered point like the…
2024 Buzz Cut
The air conditioner is teasing velcroed edges— one hundred donated Air Force patches dance on the wall. Scents of soy sauce and rice swirl in the air to music— Thai and English voices swaying back and forth. A white-haired man in a college football shirt, ball cap, and tired jeans takes his seat in the throne of the leather barber chair. His hair thin, shaggy, curling into seashells at his…
Do the prophets and apostles reveal spiritual truths in a clearer light than the ancient philosophers did?
To this a thoughtful man can only return one answer — they do. Read, for instance, the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius, and then turn to the Epistles of St. Paul, and I think you will be obliged to acknowledge that moral and spiritual truth shines in the verses of the apostle with a brilliancy and strength not to be found in the words, wise and beautiful though they are, of the imperial Stoic. Seeing, then, that the prophets and apostles speak with such deep spiritual insight, the question is, How this came to pass? They were not philosophers, scholars, and orators, as the great and learned men of Greece and Rome were. The true explanation is, "holy men of God spoke as they were moved by the Holy Ghost."
