alright, i've tried two post-twitter sites that aren't threads, here's my review:
t2.social: invite only beta right now. name isn't final. pretty simplistic currently, but there are pretty frequent updates and bugfixes, and the staff listens to both bug reports and feature requests. pretty cozy little place. demographic skews to the 25+ range, so it's usually pretty mature (read: less shitposting, more people talking to each other like people.) demographic skews to the left, but politics is nowhere near as prominent as on other platforms. nobody really treats it like a popularity contest, they just talk to each other about their day and the pictures they post, maybe post a meme or crack a joke. most people are the follow back type. there's a very prominent japanese userbase and lots of people will use DeepL or google translate to communicate with them, and vice versa - kinda cute. "home" feed has two options - either a chronological listing of every post on the site as it happens, or a feed of only people you follow. there's no algorithm or "recommended posts" - the only way you see a post a lot is if it gets reposted a lot. has no official app - think there's an unofficial one made by a user, just for android. works okay on mobile installed as a web app, in the meantime. has a dm feature
bluesky: invite only. feels like it could be okay, but from what i've seen it's kinda the worst of both twitter and tumblr worlds a lot of the time. you pretty much have to have followers to have any sort of reach because of how their recommendation algorithm works - if you don't already have a loyal following, i hope you're ready to either win some followers by commenting on popular accounts or just accept that you'll be voidposting. demographic skews young-ish and very left - if you give off a terf-y or alt-right vibe at all, expect to be justly humiliated. the home feed is the only feed that is in chronological order. heavy "popular twitter users migrate elsewhere to become big fish in a little pond" vibes - basically, picture twitter 2 or 3 years ago without the conservative side. there are lots of cute animal posters, though. pretty good self-moderation/post filters. make sure you're absolutely certain before turning off the "adult" filter or you might get recommended furry dick. has an app. no dm feature that i've seen yet
i have an invite for t2, no invites for bluesky yet.
