PLOT HOLE FIX:

why the emperor isnt just whisking theihe away is because he tried to do that with umbra, who was tortured to death for her treason. this is what prompted him to create his own kingdom and take her away through the only apparently legitimate means he had at that time. also it wasnt umbra who set the curse upon the world, but the emperor in his rage upon seeing what happened to his daughter
