Watching the DVD extras from TAB tonight, including the Sherlockology Q&A with some of the cast & crew (Amanda, Una, David Nellist, Sue, and Steven).
Some of the things that Steven said just gave me pause. (Thanks to the amazing Ariane DeVere for the transcript so I didn’t have to type it all up myself)
(Emphasis mine)
Q: Do you ever feel the urge to do something shocking with the show?
A: Well, we wouldn’t do anything ... we have no desire, no interest in doing anything that is totally wrong for Doyle. We’re not gonna massively contradict him. I mean, minor things like what century it’s set in, yes, but ... We don’t stick to the canon; it’s not a restriction. It’s an amazing platform, that’s what it is. It’s not a cage. It’s a stage. There’s nothing restrictive about it. But no – we’re not going to do what Doyle would never have done. No. Not because we feel obliged, not because we feel constrained, but because if you want to get Sherlock Holmes right, do what Doyle does, ’cause he’s the best at it.
I’m still mulling it all over, tbh. So many mixed feelings when looking at this in regards to TFP. I feel like up until then, the storylines have at least ghosted canon, right? They tweaked, but they never invented. I just can’t wrap my head around this uniform feeling they seemed to emit from the very beginning, and then all the sudden in S4 they just...what? Went off the rails?
There has to be more. They have a plan. They’re pissing me off withholding it, but I truly believe they’re going to provide their own fix-it for TFP.
