Is Tabé-O-Ja playable on Switch 2?

Yes, but if you wish to summon Tabegami using God Codes, you will need a Right Joy-Con from the Switch 1, as the Switch 2 Joy-Cons lack the IR camera.

Everything else operates the same on Switch 2.

Tabé-O-Ja Full Japanese script

Edit 6/8/26: Hello, this was once a doc with both the entire Tabé-O-Ja script in Japanese along with English "translations" beneath each line. However, it was done by feeding it into deepL/google translate and editing it to make as much sense as possible. Due to my increasing disgust with AI and desire not to have it near my hobbies/interests, I have removed all the English. This was once to be the basis for a (thankfully unfinished) English romhack too. I leave it up to more capable hands to someday give it the English translation it deserves.

Evolution & Taste Change

Certain Tabegami can either evolve or Taste Change if you the meet their requirements. Both methods require you have the necessary item (soul ingredients) and some gold.

Example: To evolve Curine (Fighter-type) into Marines Curine (Fighter-type), you’ll need the item “Marines Spice”. Evolution items are always indicated with a red background. Evolution can only be performed once and cannot be reversed afterwards.

Example: To Taste Change Curine (Fighter-type) into Hot Curine (Tricker-type), you’ll need the item “Hot Curine Spice”. Taste Change items are also indicated with a red background. If you wish to change Hot Curine back into Curine, you'll need the item “Curine Spice”. Unlike evolution, Taste Change can be performed as many times as you wish provided you have enough of the needed items.

Where to go to perform evolution or Taste Change:

When viewing the Tabegami box menu, press X to switch over to the 2nd menu tab. You’ll see which of your Tabegami are currently eligible for evolution or taste change.

Selecting a Tabegami will bring up a submenu detailing all their options for evolution and Taste Change. Your Tabegami will need to reach maximum level and you must own their required item. If you do, you’ll see a purple CLEAR sign. If you don’t, a message will appear.

レベル・魂食材が足りないため進化することができません: Cannot evolve due to lack of level and soul ingredients. (A similar message can appear for just not having a high enough level or just lacking the specific soul ingredient.)

デッキにセットされているため進化することができません: Cannot evolve because it is set in your deck.

When you’ve met all requirements and wish to proceed with an evolution or Taste Change, a screen showing what stat/type changes will occur when the process is complete. 

The game will show you how many of the soul ingredient and gold you’ll still have after finishing the evolution/Taste Change.

Finish the minigame and you’ll have completed the process!

*1度「進化」したタベガミをもラー度進化させることはできません: A Tabegami that has been evolved once cannot be evolved again.

For example, this is the entire Ramen Tabegami evolutionary line: (1-Star) Men’nyan, (2-Star) Nyanfumen, (3-Star) Raimen, (4-Star) Raiko. 

However, if you have Men’nyan and want to eventually evolve it up to Raikou, you cannot. You can only evolve Men’nyan to Nyanfumen; you won’t be allowed to evolve it again. (Nyanfumen is eligible for Taste Change however.) To get Raiko, you’d need to summon Raimen and then evolve it to Raiko. Check here to see which Tabegami can only be obtained through buying physical God Recipes.

Quest Mode

Quest Mode can be played in full if you own the full version of Tabé-O-Ja. If you own Tabé-O-Ja Mini Size, you can only play through Chapter 0 and 1. The story will unfold as you progress through the chapters.

Before selecting a episode to play, you can view which enemies you’ll be up against and which rewards you can earn randomly upon completion. You can also switch the difficulty to Hard (by pressing Y) or Beginner mode (by pressing the + button) if you wish.

With the items you obtain playing through Quest Mode, you can strengthen or even evolve your Tabegami.

Some soul ingredient items you obtain can be used to take your 4-Star Tabegami, like General Curine, to the maximum level cap of 100.

Expotions

Expotions are optional items you can equip for battles. The base Tabe-O-Ja game set includes Pepper Ripper but additional Expotions can be purchased separately.

Expotions can be inserted into the O-Ja Gear Right Joy-Con cover. It’s not necessary, but it completes the look of the O-Ja Gear.

At any time while in the main hub, you can press Y to bring up the Expotion menu. Unlike God Recipes, which use the Joy-Con’s IR Camera, Expotions use the NFC reader.  If you want to switch out your current Expotion, click “こうかん” to scan in your Expotion on the NFC reader of your Right Joy-Con. You don’t need to scan in your Expotion every time you play the game, just when you wish to swap them.

During battles:

Your Expotion meter, located on the bottom right-hand side of the screen, will automatically fill with each use (until totally empty). You can also expand the area of effect the Expotion will have by pressing and holding the R button as you move the cursor to the desired location on the playfield.
