[TOP Scenario] When 'The Cracks Remain'
‘You can fix a broken mirror but the cracks will always remain.’
The skies are dark, heavy with the low riding clouds. The only sounds that you can hear is the rain tattering against the window pane. The sky is crying when you are unable to shed tears. You think that maybe you have grown numb to every emotion. You’re so used to people leaving you without a word, used to believing that disappointment will always be the outcome of relationships.
You think that maybe there’s something wrong with you. There has to be something wrong with you—like something has been placed in the wrong spot in your genetic code to make other people want to leave your side. You stare down at your shattered reflection—broken glass pieces scattered across the floor. ‘Cry. Show any kind of emotion. Do something!’ you tell yourself. The expression that stares back is blank. An absolute blank canvas.
Your boyfriend sighs and runs his hands through his hair. He thinks that you can’t be this emotionless. It’s just not possible for a human to hold back this much. Grabbing his coat, he brisks past you.
“Please don’t leave,” you whisper.
The words tingle at your spine causing you remember the last time you said that sentence. The image of your parents walking away from you is something that you have tried to forget. They left you alone and never came back for you. You don’t know whether they’re alive or dead. Sad as it may seem, you prefer the latter—it gives you a reason as to why they have never tried to find you. It was the first chip in your small heart that started to grow over time. With each person that came in and left to never be seen again, the hole just grew larger and more fragile.
Your heart is just not made to love. It’s barely holding itself together. This might be the last crack to break it all down—to break whatever you had left going for you.
“Tell me what you want,” you say. “just don’t leave.”
So many have left before him and he is no different. He doesn't take a look back at you as the door closes behind him. The mirror that is broken on the floor is staring back at you. A mirror that your mother left you--the only thing that your parents left you is in pieces. Reaching out to put the mirror back into one piece, there's a familiar voice that calls out your name. You look around your apartment but there is nobody in sight. The voice brings comfort to your ears--like you've heard it since you were little. Leaning down to the mirror, your eyes become wide as the voice gets louder and louder as you are just a couple of centimeters away from the broken glass. The sound tires your eyes and soon--all of your senses dull--numbing yourself from the cruel reality that you have lived in for so long.
--------------------
'We should've taken her with us from the beginning. She thinks that we abandoned her,' a woman's voice is faintly heard in the background.
'She was safer in that world than this one,' a young man says.
'Then we should've let her come back sooner. Everything is over now. It's been over for so long--'
You groan a bit as you sit up and open your eyes. Your head is pounding to the beat of a drum and as you look around--the brightness of the room is blinding. Everything is white--like a castle made of ice. There's a middle-age couple and a young man, dressed as if they came out of a Cinderella novel, standing near the doorway. The woman's eyes glistens as she rushes to your side. She hold yours hands within her own and kisses them. You immediately pull away because you don't recognize her. You don't know any of the people in the room.
"Where am I?" you ask and scoot back towards the wall.
The young man answers, "Home."
You scoff and mumble to yourself, "Home? I haven't had a real home since I was born." Looking up at the three people, you ask, "Then, who are you people? Why am I here?" Freaking out should probably be one of the first emotions you should be feeling but there was none of that. Despite the hammer in your head, you are calm and relaxed--which is a bit unsettling considering you are in a place you've never seen in your life.
The woman speaks, almost at the brink of tears, "Y-your--mom. I--I'm your mother. He's your dad." She points to the older gentleman standing beside her.
You shake your head. "No--no way. Y--You're kidding, right?" you ask, incredulously. Pinching your skin, you want to believe that this has to be a dream, a nightmare even. It hurts but it doesn't hurt as much as knowing that you're parents were alive and well--not to mention living in an ice castle like royalty. "There's no way that you two are--" you grip onto the covers of the bed that you're sitting. "Then who is he? My brother?" You ignore the urge to scream and ask why they left you alone--if they are indeed your parents.
"I'm Seunghyun. A friend of your parents," he bows his head to you as if you are politically ranked higher than he is.
You dig your face into the palms of your hands. It feels like an information overload that you are hestitant to believe. As you lift your head, you see a mirror hanging on the wall. It is the same mirror as the one that was broken. You stand up from your seat and walk to the mirror, surprised at what you see when you look through it. The image as you stare through the mirror is of your apartment. "How is this possible," you say to yourself. You reach out and touch the face of the mirror but your fingers travels right through the glass.
"We had to send you over to that world because it wasn't safe here. You weren't safe here. You're okay now though--" the older man says.
"Just because you say that I should be okay--doesn't mean that the scars aren't still there," you finally snap. "I've lived 25 years of my life without knowing if you people are alive or dead. You can't expect me to erase all of those years with the snap of my fingers. It doesn't work like that. Cracks of the heart don't heal that way!"
The words that you vented hurt them--you know that it hurts for them to see you this way. It's not that you want to reject them but it's so hard to accept them right now--at this point in your life--it's hard to accept any person.
"Is it okay if I have a few moments with her?" Seunghyun asks. The older couple reluctantly nod and leave the room. Seunghyun stands next to you and has a rather poised demeanor. His posture is straight, hands to the side--almost like he has had a military background. "It was my idea to send you away," he starts. "To send you to that world."
"Worlds. You talk like this is another dimension."
"It is. The one across the mirror was the safest one that I could provide. It wasn't the ideal as you have experienced but again--it was the safest option at that time."
"So what are you? A royal guard for those two people?"
"Somewhat of a royal guard. I suppose you can call it that but my duty is your protection and your's alone."
You laugh, "Great job with that, Seunghyun. You get a gold star."
"You are feeling bitter against us, am I not wrong?" Seunghyun asks. He speaks with such grace and dignity in comparison to yourself. The once calm nature that you felt when you awoke is no longer in effect. You feel anger and resentment towards these people.
"Just wake me up from this nightmare," you sigh and slide your back down against the icy walls.
He follows and sits down next to you, "But you were in a nightmare yourself--on the other side of the mirror. You thought you were alone all this time but we've been watching. We kept an eye on you to make sure you were safe. We just didn't know how you would react when we brought you back."
"I hope they didn't expect me to welcome them with open arms."
"It doesn't hurt to give them a hug. You are not the only one with scars to show. We all missed you."
You look at Seunghyun. There's a sense of familiarity within him that you did not see until now. "You said that you had to send me away--why? Why was it not safe here? Ogres running about or something?"
He laughs with the back of his hand covering his mouth, "No. No ogres. There was a war between houses. There were killings of any one in line to the throne. Your life was at stake. The tipping point was on the night of the one-month anniversary of your birth, an assassin entered into your room--dagger in hand." Seunghyun lifts his right hand. A darkened patch of skin sits between his thumb and index finger. "Went straight through."
Your fingers graze across the scarring on his hand. "You saved my life."
"You are worth saving," he says it in a way so that it seems his whole life's purpose is devoted to your protection. "Don't hate your parents for the decision I made for them. You should hate me."
You look towards the empty doorway. You are not insensible to the fact that your parents are alive. As a matter of fact, you are more than thrilled but it doesn't mask the fact that you can wipe away your past and make a clean slate. Opening up to a person is not something you do often. If you had grown up in a different environment--maybe it wouldn't be an issue but you didn't. You grew up alone. Being alone is all that you know.
"I don't hate you or them--" you try to explain. "I'm just afraid that if I accept them, they'll leave me again. I mean--you watched me, you know how my life went. Everyone leaves me. I'm always alone."
Seunghyun looks at you. He sees the broken soul that is afraid to trust any one. For the life that you have lived, he knows how difficult it must be for you to process all of this. He takes a deep breath and slides his hands into yours. "I stake my life on this--from now on--you won't be alone. We won't leave you--I won't leave you ever again."
And slowly the cracks within your heart began to seal.
