Armors and helmets displayed at Hamamatsu Castle
statue of 徳川家康TOKUGAWA IEYASU, created by Oihira Tohkichi
At the Battle of Tableland, Ieyasu was severely defeated by Shingen. He absconded from the battlefield called Mikatagahara and headed to Hamamatsu Castle. It was Jan 1573.
About this Ieyasu’s escape scene we have some legends. On his way back to the castle, he got tired and found a small tea house. He ate a ‘Azuki bean rice cake(小豆餅 Azukimochi)’ here. Before he paid its charge Shingen’s chasers were approaching. So he ran away again. The old woman managing this tea house also chased him saying ‘Thief, Pay money’. She caught up with Ieyasu and took money(銭をmoney 取るtake) from him. Now we can find the place names '小豆餅azukimochi’ and '銭取zenitori’ on Mikatahara Tableland .
The bus stop '銭取ZENITORI’ a fabulous place name
Arriving at the castle, Ieyasu prepared to meet the enemy. One of his staff , Ookubo Tadayo came up with a trap. He made ‘a fabric bridge 布橋’, a bride(Hashi橋) made of fabric(Nuno布). There was a steep valley in front of the castle. He covered that with large fabric. It got already dark at night. If someone from other land had seen it, he would have thought of that fabric as a bridge. And Shingen’s troops did so. Many samurais ran onto the fake bridge and fell to the bottom of the valley to die. Then Shingen stopped having a fight against Ieyasu.
Now we can find the town name ‘布橋NunoHashi’ in Hamamatsu and we call the valley '犀ヶ崖SAIGA GAKE cliff ’.
