It has been about a month now since I joined the team. I’ve been working hard, the days are always long but frankly, I don’t mind spending most of my time in the building. Not as long as I can see Benny. We’ve spent most of our lunch breaks together, sometimes just the two of us, sometimes with the rest of the team. Every glance he throws in my way makes my heart flutter and my stomach contract. I can feel my pulse rise, my palms start to get sweaty and I can feel my cheeks start to blush. I wonder if he notices. I wonder if he sees that I am always looking forward to knowing more about him, to hear him talk, to see him smile, to hear his voice. I am always looking forward to his presence. As soon as I hear his voice, my body relaxes. It’s like a natural reflex – I can’t help it, I can’t do anything about it. This longing for him is starting to drive me crazy. As soon as he walks into the room I forget everything else that was on my mind, he is all that exists for me. It has caused me to be in some awkward situations – for example when I forgot to take my keys from my desk because he walked into my office to say goodbye one night, and I had to return to TAC at 9 pm to collect them.
The team was having lunch, but I was still working on my laptop. We were working on a new case, but things weren’t looking bright at all. It would be hard to convince the jury that our defendant is innocent, and Bull is expecting us to work hard – as always. I had been going through the files during the entire day, just to find one thing that could help us out, or, better put, help Benny out. I was deeply focussed when I heard a knock on the glass door.
“Don’t you need to eat?” Bull asks. He pointed to the slice of cake in front of me. “That doesn’t count as lunch.”
“I’m fine, I just need to find one thing that can help us out in court tomorrow.”
“Y/N, you also need lunch.” He walked over to my desk and moved his fingers over the top my laptop screen. “Save the document.”
“What?” I looked up confused and saw he was smirking.
“Save whatever you are doing, and do it quickly.” He started to pull down the screen, and I clicked on ‘save file’ as quick as I could.
“Now, have some lunch. Here, I brought you a sandwich and some tea.” Bull handed me the sandwich and a steamy mug and sat down on my desk.
“So, how long have you been liking him?” he asked, he wasn’t even trying to hide the big smile on his face.
“Who?” I tried to pretend to be confused, but I could feel the blood flowing to my face, making it red. I looked down at my laptop, trying to hide my blushing, but Bull probably noticed already.
“Oh come on, you know nothing goes unnoticed for me, don’t you? I’m talking about Benny. It’s not hard to notice, really. The looks you give him, the tea you always bring for him, you remember everything he tells you. That kind of gave you away, didn’t it? I didn’t need my three Ph.D.’s to figure that out, Y/N. How long?”
I took a deep breath, trying to figure out what to say to him. How could I ever think Bull wouldn’t notice? He can read anyone. There really wasn’t any other option than to tell him, and it’d feel good to be able to talk to someone about it.
“You want me to be honest?” I asked him.
“I’ll notice if you’re not, so yeah, that would be the easy way.” He was still smiling.
“Since the first day when I saw him. When you introduced him to me, and you said he was a pit bull. That was the moment, really.” I was avoiding looking into his eyes, or rather looking into his direction at all. I didn’t want to see Bull’s smiling face, and more importantly, I didn’t want him to notice my blushing. “I don’t know what it is about him, but I felt something the moment I saw him.” I stopped to take a deep breath – I was going to spill it all out.
“We talked, on my third day. When I was about to leave, I saw Benny boxing in another room. We had tea, and it just felt good, you know? Comfortable. Easy, really. Like I know him for all my life. And I felt so stupid, for liking him since the beginning. He probably doesn’t even feel the same way about me.” I looked into Bull’s eyes now, finding him still smiling.
“I know.”, he said. “Benny told me about that talk. He told me about you.” He was looking at me with a mischievous look in his eyes.
“He did?” I asked surprised.
“Come have lunch with us now,” Bull said, still smiling, as he stood up from my desk and walked away, taking the slice of cake with him. I was left with so many questions. When I walked into the room where the team was having lunch, I saw Bull leaning over Benny. He was whispering something to him. I wondered if that mischievous look ever left Bull’s face, I had never seen him without it. Benny looked in my direction, his dark, piercing eyes twinkled in the sunlight. As Bull walked away, Benny approached me.
“Y/N, hey.” He smiled at me.
“Ehm, hi,” I said, wondering what Bull just whispered to him. Would he have told Benny that I like him?
“Do you want some more tea? Green, as usual?” Benny already walked to the kitchen, ready to boil the water. Bull glanced at me from the other side of the room and winked.
“Alright, team, back to work,” Bull announced.
