ilya has been living in canada with coach!irina and his brother alexei since she took her boys and fled grigori and russia under the cover of night when ilya was 12 years old. ilya meets mlh star shane hollander during the leadup to his first olympic games (he has had canadian citizenship for several years at this point). sochi 2014 is also his first time back in russia since childhood. the two begin their private relationship and public friendship shortly thereafter. shane hollander wins back-to-back-to-back cups beginning in 2014. shane and ilya come out on their own terms during the off-season after scott and kip's kiss in 2017. shane is there to cheer ilya on as skates for olympic gold in pyeongchang 2018. ilya landed the first quadruple-axel in competition earlier the same year, and successfully lands the jump during the olympic games. ilya's performance in 2018's games launches him to genuine celebrity in his own right. this renews (mostly positive) attention on shane and ilya's relationship, with media ocassionally asking about ilya at post-game pressers, especially after any big figure skating competitions. a few years later, shane and ilya get to celebrate shane's (fourth) cup win in 2020 (together, publicly) as the best in the world at their respective sports.
