Please pardon me, I’ve been away from the bee world for a few weeks...focusing on photographing FLIES! Yes, when the bees of fall disappear and the flowers persist it is high time for the two-winged pollinators to take over. I have quite a few shots to share. First off is this handsome tachina fly. Now wouldn’t this make a swell Halloween costume? A tachinid fly of the genus Peleteria. Much of the good green earth would be gobbled to the ground if not for these flies, as they play a big role in putting a check on other insects, especially those in the order Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies), where they often act as parasitoids of caterpillars. Although out Lepidopteran friends can be a delight to have around, the caterpillars of many can wreak havoc on an ecosystem or garden if left unchecked by these intimidating flies.
