Uuuugh one of my caterpillars that was getting ready to pupate died today because it had been parasitized by tachinid flies. :/ There’s no way that I could’ve prevented it, since the caterpillar had probably been infected for a long time before I found it and brought it in, but I’m still bummed because it’s my second death this week when all summer I’ve been having very few issues. I’ve got one chrysalis remaining and I’m paranoid about that too, because it was briefly in the container with another caterpillar I brought in that very quickly died of a different infection. This whole week has just been such a downer and this makes it worse.

When I first caught a glimpse of this I thought it was a picture wing fly (Ulidiidae,) and then I thought is was some sort of hoverfly (Syrphidae) with black wings.  Turns out that it is a tachnid (Tachinidae) fly.
