July 12, 2017 is when you need to start bringing your own shopping bags. Thin plastic carryout bags will no longer be distributed at any Tacoma retailers or there is a minimum charge of 5 cents a bag for paper bags; however, those who receive EBT/WIC/TANF are excluded from the bag charge. Bags other than carryout bags, such as produce bags, dry cleaning bags & newspaper bags will still be available for free. The law follows the same model that 12 other communities in WA State have already successfully implemented. This was passed on July 12, 2016 to give a one year adjustment period. These photos were from one of the City Council meetings where the public weighed in. As you can see, even The Sonics Guy spoke in favor of this. The Dollar Store has reusable bags as well as most stores. It really isn't a big deal, it just takes a little time to remember consistently. I have a bag with all my bags inside of it on my front seat so I don't forget. Many Countries around the world successfully banned plastic bags many years ago to help save the planet/oceans/sea life as well as to combat unsightly plastic bags littering the landscape.
