Dear Tacoma, you’re beautiful. I just made a few small prints of my Tacoma watercolor city blocks map as gifts for Clark’s teachers today and one for our lovely mail carrier. I finished the #tacomawa #citylines #map #drawing and will be making prints to sell at the Tacoma Historical Society Shop, celebrating their new #mappingtacoma exhibit. Opening Reception tomorrow 4/21 from 5-7 pm. . As you can see, the scale of the Tacoma Map is very small. I think it's too small to watercolor the entire area on my standard 16 x 16 or 17 x 17 watercolor paper. So, if you are interested in commissioning a watercolor map of Tacoma, I am offering custom map areas and paper sizes, from 2 Square Miles to 8 in paper from 6" to 17" square. Drawing Tacoma's street network is enlightening. I know my neighborhood well, but most everything west of J Street is virgin territory for me. This is a great exercise for a newcomer - to piece things together, geographically. The different neighborhoods, parks, shape of the coastline... It's fascinating to think about my first impressions of Tacoma, as we made plans to move here and began looking at houses and how those impressions have been filled in with the details of real experience, mostly walking the city. I think it's one of my favorite things in life - discovering, coming to know, new places.
