When most styles say they’re going to work kihon, they mean basics: punching, blocking, etc. In Shuri-ryu, we have a set of kumite kata called kihon as well. There are 30 total, and this video demonstrates 1-5. (Side note: he has flipped 2 and 3; I’m not sure if he was taught/teaches them that way or if he did it for another reason.)

There are 30 in all, and I know the first 20, which is required for nidan. Where we run ippon kumite kata for power and our taezu naru waza for speed and flow, the kihon are ideally run with a perfect blend of the two.
