Max’s Birthday!
1 am on Friday, January the 27th, 2017...
Although Sobhan always insist on driving, he wasn’t about to drive in LA morning traffic.. that was for sure, so 1 am it was ..
Sobhan, Mash, and Billy’s first road trip together!
The point of the trip was actually for Billy’s friend Max’s birthday, but they thought it would be cool to all go together and make some stops at some popular attractions on the way!
First stop was the Griffith Observatory!
The Griffith Observatory is a Los Angeles attraction that sits on Mt. Hollywood commanding a view of the Hollywood sign, and the entire Los Angeles basin, from downtown LA to the pacific ocean in the southwest region. Stopping here was a must being that the time of day that they would arrive would be the best for pictures. Check out the view!
Next up, was Venice Beach beach because its Venice Beach.. duh, but also because we were starved and they have so many cool foods on !
So Berlins was the choice! Berlins is German ‘street food’ inspired cuisine, which seemed fitting being that Sobhan and Billy are from Germany AND brothers as well, like the founders who opened it in 2013. Plus Mash had never had it!
When they arrived they saw a couple having lunch and asked them what they thought of the food before ordering. Come to find out they were from Germany as well! They said that Berlins was the closest that they had outside of Germany, Sobhan and Billy agreed, Mash included, he said, “wow I would 100% go back and 10/10 recommend this to anyone !!!! It was super good!”
Next up was The Korean Friendship Bell.
Going here was Mash’s idea, he had been here before, and like the Griffith Observatory, he knew that it had a nice view.
The Korean Friendship bell is a huge bronze bell beautifully set in a stoned pavilion. It was donated in 1976 by the Public of Korea to the people of Los Angeles as an act of friendship and to celebrate the 200th anniversary of independence. The structure was constructed on site by 30 craftsmen flown in from Korea!
After taking pictures of the view, the bell itself, and the environment they started heading back to the car. Their eyes immediately caught this tiffany blue Chevy Bel Air. Mash noticed an older gentlemen taking pictures of it but as he went to join him they both noticed the owner of the vehicle, very proudly, strutting towards it. In his hand was a Carl’s JR bag filled to the brim.
We chatted a bit as I kept taking pictures. He explained how his father worked at a company that manufactured replica parts for Bel Air’s. This particular one he had only owned for six-ish months and was restoring it. He was a super nice dude.
After the Bel Air sighting, they continued their trip to San Diego.
Arriving in San Diego around 9 and having had such a long day, the gang crashed almost instantly after they got there.
The next morning they took Max to breakfast, following a BBQ they had at the house with all his friends and family.
Later on in the night Max, Sobhan, Mash and Billy all headed to down town San Diego for a night of partying to sum up the birthday festivities.
The next day before heading back home, Billy and Max decided to take the group to a spot near the water that they used to chill at back when they were in school. They reminisced on all the good times they’ve had since meeting each other.
Max thanked them for coming down to see him. Billy told him it would be the first of many visits!

First Line
Rules: List the first lines of your last 20 stories (or however many you have altogether). See if there are any patterns. Then tag your favorite authors.
I was tagged by @unforth-ninawaters, so let’s see what I’ve got, playing with things I’m actively juggling right now....
1. It had been a quiet day going over the books, until Sammy burst into my office without so much as a knock, tossing a folded newspaper on my desk. (The Case of the Feckless Ferrets, a Patreon-only story)
2. The body slipped and dropped, as the noonday sun slipped past the marker post and shaded into afternoon. (THE DEVIL’S WEST #3, currently untitled)
3. I was chasing a book. (untitled fantasy PI story)
4. Gershon swung his feet over the side of his bed, feeling cool wood under his feet, the scratch of rough wool blanket under his palms. (“Boots of Clay,” a Devil’s West story)
5. It’s amazing, how much of what we love depends on it rotting, first. (”The Girl of Blood, Moss, and Shadows”)
6. Even as the adhān rang out across the city on the first stretches of dawn, he felt the gnawing inside him return, phantom-cold and insistent, overwhelming the shadowed fragments of his dreams. (“Sand in Blood.”)
7. I scowled at the filing cabinet, a finger poking into the too-full drawers. (An Interrupted Cry: A Sylvan Investigations novella)
8. The fog had seen better days. (”Dispossession”)
9. “My lady, I dislike this place.” (”The Cost”)
10. The moon is rising fast tonight, scooping out the horizon, pouring it back into the sea. (”Last Blood”)
Tagging everyone who follows me who writes, basically. Lemme see what ya got!
