Observations on Fictional Passions
As I ponder why people don't understand why we love the Star Wars Expanded Universe so much I realize this has happened to me before.
It happened when my Grandfather didn't understand why I'd yell at the characters, while watching the movie on video, 'it's a trap!' they couldn't hear me anyway. My response was: well why do you yell at the football players? They can't hear you either, even if they aren't fictional.
Books are the same way. For people not much into reading, they don't know what its like to get so far into a book those people become like friends and family. Perhaps more were exposed to this with Harry Potter's rise in popularity.
Picture never getting to read Harry Potter book 7 because someone bought the franchise. Picture never knowing the end of the story. Or picture the movie makers deciding to scrap it and do their own completely unrelated story of the seventh movie. How would the Potter fan react?
It's like saying goodby to someone you love, only you get no chance to say goodbye. It's a violent ending, sudden, with no warning. Sure you can look through your old home videos and scrapbooks and journals for the long lost loved one, but there will be no new ones. They are gone. You don't get over losing someone you love.
And we do love them. We love Jaina Solo and Ben Skywalker, Tahiri Veila and Raynar Thul and Lowbacca. We were promised Jaina Solo's Sword of the Jedi PUBLICLY at conventions, it was on the book list line up, only to be snatched away.
Disney can do as it wishes with its own stories and movies. They didn't have to deny these other characters their continued stories to do it. They still don't.
And if anyone says no one notices or cares I'd ask: then why were they on the New York Times best seller list .... 150 times?
