ok I’ve been thinking about taituk’s attitude towards murder lately and I think might have come to a tentative conclusion. the main problem is that if I make taituk just “ok with murder” is that, by letting (part of) their crew stay there, I would imply that attitude extends to the entirety of the tribe. but taituk being against killing in any and all cases would not be realistic, considering their job (pirate captain), and their background (grew up half on a farm in the earth kingdom where killing animals for meat presumably wasn’t rare, half in the south pole, where the main source of food is animals—both of which would lead them or others to question what the difference is between killing animals and killing people. are people of higher worth than animals and do they therefore deserve to not be killed? does that mean that animals don’t deserve to live? etc)

so I think the most realistic opinion for them to have would be that killing needs to save more lives than it takes. hunting for food, killing somebody to prevent them from hurting/killing others is okay, but hunting for fun and murder out of anything other than necessity is not.

trying to figure out character voices for my ocs and I think the one I have the clearest picture of rn is taituk. they speak…not quite stiffly maybe but definitely a tad formal. more connective words & full sentences than most people use when speaking. they’ve got the admirable habit of just letting silence fall until they’ve thought of the right thing to say, very little uhming or use of other filler words. they tend to be overly specific rather than vague—e.g., instead of saying something is rare or common, they might try to give a numeric indication of how rare or common it is. they talk quite slowly and quietly, but can make themself heard if so desired. absolutely hate shouting. they prefer to speak calmly, and if they’re in an emotional situation they will wait to compose themself until they know their voice will be level. because of this they can seem emotionless to the untrained eye, but they’re just good at hiding/repressing them lol

fun fact about the birates is that the three waterbenders on the ship all have different bending styles.

mallik is a klutz and can’t fight for shit, but he’s an incredible healer. if a crew member is injured, he’ll have them back on their feet in the blink of an eye.

iraluq has tried to learn healing, which she as a trans woman never learned in the north, but her skills are nowhere near mallik’s. she’s incredible at fighting though, and has developed her own style relying heavily on sharp movements along with the tradition fluidity of waterbending. lots of ice daggers, water whips, attacks frozen at the last second.

taituk can heal decently, but it’s mostly for their own use. when they fight, they use water bending in addition to their dual swords. while they do use their bending to attack directly, they also often use it for things like ice slides and targeted waves to move quickly through the battle. freezing the ground, their opponent’s hands and feet, disarming them, that kind of stuff. lots of practical, everyday use too, like soupbending or swabbing the deck. or dousing xuan when he’s up to something.
