#takatapui flag

hi! i saw there was a lack of a māori takatāpui flag and i wanted to try to make one to fix that!

i wanted to include the diversity of gender and sexuality under the flag so i tried to incorporate the rainbow and the trans flag's colours with the māori flag's colours + koru to blend them to signify how none of these things can be separated from each-other in life's path. i wanted to try to get the opinion of other māori (especially takatāpui māori) on this flag as i'm just one person and i would like to hear from people who may want to use this flag in the future. i appreciate any feedback! either way, reblogs are appreciated!

the flag is made with icons in mind and can be cropped into a square while still showing the entire design. if people are interested, i can post a full quality square version of this flag.

very lovely flag! I know this is online so flags aren't designed as much with this in mind, but if someone were to actually try and sew that it would be very difficult, do you have plans for any simplified versions? I know the complexity is a good chunk of the design so no worries if not, just very curious

hey! thank you, that's definitely a valid critique. i was definitely thinking with printing more in mind than sewing when i made it but yeah i can see how sewing would be difficult. i have a couple other drafts that would be a bit easier to make from a sewing perspective but i wasn't able to really find something that would both include the rainbow flag, maori symbolism and/or colours, and something to explicitly include gender (i know trans people are included under the rainbow flag but i wanted to make it specific y'know)

this is one of the drafts i had which i think would be easier from a purely sewing perspective while maintaining the koru since you could create both flags, cut one out using a stencil, and sew it to the front of the other flag (also rainbow flags are easily bought online if you don't want to sew a whole flag just to cut it up.) i decided against it as the one to initially suggest since like you pointed out i was thinking more about online spaces + fabric printing and felt like something more complex would fit a maori flag, but i do want the design to be more easily made at home so i can understand why that would be an issue
