An Archive of Our Own, a project of the Organization for Transformative Works
The first chapter is done! Enjoy and all that, I'm very happy with how it turned out. I might be getting better at writing character interactions too I think.

He’s scrolling, he’s scrolling, he’s scrolling. Ah ha! There it is. Atsushi leaned over slightly, unintentionally at this point in time, but later he will probably make a concerted effort to demean the other for his height. He handed the smartphone over to the other, displaying a picture of a rather rotund feline. “It’s my neighbor’s...” he began slowly. “I was asked to look for him, he got out earlier today. But...I don’t think he could have gone far.” There was a pause and a slender finger pointed at the picture on the screen. “He’s super fat.”
“someone scared you, didn’t they?” @ Mikan!!
There’s a sniffle from Mikan, pathetic as ever. Of course she was scared again, when wasn’t she? This one was different, though. The primal terror of what they’d said, this was new. Anything about losing someone she’d worked so hard to impress. That was a new kind of fear that Mikan hadn’t felt before.
She looked at Byakuya, blurred as he was through bitter tears she tried her best to stop. No matter how hard she tried, they continued to flow. She reached out a hand, only momentarily, then returned it to her other wrist, gripping herself. You don’t deserve anyone. Someone like you near someone like him.
Unworthy. Ungrateful. Shameful. PATHETIC.
Nails bit into her own flesh, trembling with her attempt to calm herself. She couldn’t speak, her voice failed her whenever she tried, so she gave a small nod in response to Byakuya’s question. She had to answer him. She had to show she heard him, no matter how hard it was.
