after a rough shift, exhausted, as he often was, Jesse should’ve easily been able to get a full night’s sleep. especially, in his own bed, at home, as opposed to his twin, at the firehouse, with his fiancé in his arms. on days such as today, though, a day that hadn’t been the best, Jesse had an awfully bad habit of replaying the day’s events, searching for something that he could have done better, or something that could’ve been done differently, altogether, as a unit. though, he’d fought it, his mind had refused to slow it’s roll. retracting his arm, slowly, from where it had hung, around her waist, Jesse quietly slipped from bed, and into their living room, taking a pillow, along with him. making use of the blanket they’d left out, earlier, Jesse settled into the couch, turning to precariously flip through the channels of the TV, though, at a volume that he’d hoped wouldn’t wake her. it was clear to him, no more than 20 minutes later, that he hadn’t been as cautious as he would’ve liked to have been.
propping himself up, a bit, as Danielle appeared, out from behind him, Jesse was quick to offer an apology. “damnit… baby, I didn’t mean to wake you. you… y’know, how I get.” he sighed, she nodded. though, half-asleep, seemingly, he’d known she’d understood. “I felt for you… and you weren’t there,” she pouted, in response, as she drew closer, to where he’d lay. smiling, coyly, to himself, as she stood before him, in nothing more, than one of his old t-shirts. how was it, that she’d made them look, like… that? reaching out, for her hand, Jesse pulled her towards the couch, just close enough, that he could press a kiss, lightly, against her knuckles. “I’ll… be back in, in a bit, okay? you’ve got work, in the morning,” he’d reminded her, as if, urging her, to go back to bed. he should’ve known, that she wouldn’t listen. with a shake of her head, she’d tugged at the blanket, that he’d been using. crawling, underneath it, and on top of him, Danielle nuzzled her head, into his chest. her legs, intertwined, with his own. “I’m good, right here,” she’d offered, drowsily. arguing would have been of no use, to him. instead, he’d allowed a hand to trail down her back, tracing circles, against it, until he could tell that she’d fallen asleep, once more.
“you… have no idea,” he’d muttered, softly, quite positive, that his smile could’ve lasted, until the end of time.
