You can have the same discussion about Glinda! Is magic innate to certain people or can you learn it in a seminar from Madame Morrible? Is the bubble Glinda’s magic or a technical trick provided to her by the Wizard? So much to discuss.

EXACTLY!!!! In the musical, Glinda casts no spells at all! But we still understand that she has some form of magical powers because she is so desperate to get into the sorcery seminar, which she eventually gets into thanks to Elphaba. So it is to be understood between the scenes (”off-stage”) she gets taught magic and can do magic spells, but has nowhere near the capabilities as Elphaba does which are ridiculously exceptional in the musical.

The bubble especially is super interesting precisely because it’s used in a theater production. With theater you have to lend your imagination and objects are more like representations. So we see the bubble is a very mechanical machine, but is that in canon or is that because it’s theater? So it could be a technical trick by the Wizard or it could be casted by Glinda (though, it’s suggested that it was a construction from the Wizard because when Elphaba confronts her about it she has no real reply). In a movie this dubiousness will be taken away because a movie has to fill in this interpretation, while in the musical an object only have to be a mere suggestion that the viewer can project their own ideas on.

So if this happens, no it won't all be fluff bc story, but instead of dealing with, like, evil dictators and underground wars, they'll be dealing with college applications and what people will think if they go to prom together

I could talk for ages about all the little decisions katie rose clarke made for Glinda, but I’ll spare you all. but I 100% agree that KRC has that Glinda angst down to a t. the moment I completely and utterly fell in love with her performance was right down at the end, after the witch’s melting. Most Glindas are either sad or angry. nothing wrong with that but..

KRC’s Glinda was bitter. oh fuck me up, that’s it. that’s adult Glinda. and when I watched the performance again (don’t judge me) I also noticed the same in NOMTW. Mentally, her Glinda enters that scene with her middle finger put up high like “fuck every single one of you. this is your fault. i hate literally every single one of you. my best friend got killed because of you and i’ll never ever forgive y’all for that.”

Obviously, that’s hid with a smile, bc Glinda. but beneath that you can actually see her going “I’m only doing this for Elphaba, because that was her last wish” and that’s a damn difficult acting performance she pulls off gracefully.

I have similar feeling about Elphaba. I prefer my Elphies to have a chip on their shoulder about how they were raised and how people have treated them their whole life and for that to come through in their acting. Some actors play Elphie too sweet and naive for my taste, especially in the first act. I like some simmering bitterness to come through in TWAI for instance. Jenny DiNoia is my favorite for this reason. My 2nd favorite based on bootlegs is Willemijn Verkaik. Her angry sneer is the best

I sadly haven’t been able to get my hands on a boot with DiNoia, but I’m super curious about her performance! Especially since she has been playing this role for quite some time as standby etc. and what I’ve heard from most Elphies is that you need to have some experience to handle such an intense role. 

I’m somewhat chiller about Elphabas than Glindas, but yes, I tend to categorize them in “soft” and “rough” Elphabas and I prefer the rougher ones. but I don’t have someone who completely stole my heart like with KRC, because I feel there is so much wiggle room to personalize Elphaba and I love that. 

From the ones I’ve seen and would categorize as “rough” I really like Willemijn Verkaik (she’s awesome, but I’m also hella biased because I’m dutch :P), Donna Vivino, Rachel Tucker, and I remember really digging Emmy Raver-Lampman’s performance and being shocked to my core that she wasn’t a fucking lead wtf? 

I mean, I think it speaks volume that I like the rougher Elphabas since I tend to judge Elphabas on their NGD performance… literally the “you’ve won. I give up” song. 

The only “soft” Elphaba that I’ve enjoyed so far is Mandy Gonzalez, and that was mostly because how she acted opposite Nessa (especially 2nd act scene), she really showed that contradicting sibling relationship that reminded me of their book-relationship. which I have never seen before and it gave me so many feels. And also because (also in act II) she had these gestures and movements and behavior that I really associate with anxiety. Which I found a very original take on Elphaba that was still very true to her character.

I am totally with you here. The journey of Glinda, her complexity, how she has to overcome how she was raised to be, and the tragedy of how she is separated from the one person who truly knows her and loves the real Glinda is what makes her such a beautifully tragic character. The actors that can portray all of that are amazing and KRC does that. I wish I could have seen her in person.

I couldn’t agree more! I’m also way more critical of my Glindas than my Elphabas probably for that reason. Lots of people who’ve seen wicked once are like “oh I love Glinda, she’s so funny and bubbly! :D” and I’m just over here, dumbstruck and quietly going “did you… did you leave after the first act??” 

And I’m not gonna deny that I have a very weak spot for grown-up angsty and bitter Glinda. I mean, I absolutely love Galinda, she is bubbly and she definitely has a lot of the punchlines in the musical. It’s a hard balance to master, and that’s why I feel like there are many good Glindas, who play her well, but there aren’t many great Glindas, who dig just a little further and portray her growth knowingly.

Also in the book this bubbliness is mostly an act, but not so in the musical. In Wickedly Queer though she is a tad more like the book, because she knows she’s gay and therefore plays the act of the “popular straight girl”. This is why she kinda clings to Fiyero, because (and I’m not sure I made this clear bc it’s implied) but Fiyero’s “scandalacious reputation” is that its rumored he has also dated boys. And Glinda immediately sees an opportunity of “Thank FUCK, another gay person. If we just pretend to be together, we can be gay without the slander of coming out.” 

Obviously, Fiyero is bisexual, and corrects her on that. But he agrees to be her beard, bc partly, he is annoyed that Elphaba had called him selfish just a few minutes ago, but mostly because he realizes that the pure and good image Glinda has got going on can help him clean up a bit of his “scandalous” reputation. 

ANYWAY, I wish I could’ve seen KRC live, but lol, I live on another continent.. I want to visit NY in a year or two, and if she happens to be in any production, I’ll probably see it tbh.
