Biography
Calvin knew from a young age that he could do things other kids couldn’t, and that he was dangerous. It started when he was barely six years old; his best friend died, and at the end of the wake, he was stunned when he touched the body… and his best friend came back to life. But something was wrong. His best friend didn’t come back normal; instead, he came back a shell, barely able to walk or speak, only capable of following the simplest of directions. Calvin hid the other boy for one night, and it was the worst of his life. By morning, he had taken his friend back to the funeral home and suffocated him with the pillow in his coffin.
He never told anyone what he could do, but he started noticing little things: how his goldfish had been alive for too long, how the stray cat who came by his parents’ house only ever seemed to listen to his father. He realized that his parents must be able to do the same thing he could, and when he told them about it, they ordered him to never tell anyone about his power, not even other people who had strange talents. And more importantly, they ordered him never to use it.
Calvin followed his parents’ instructions, living in fear of himself and everyone around him. He found Summerwald just after he got his PhD in English Literature, and for the first time, he was surrounded by people with powers like his. But still, he didn’t reveal his secret. He just laid low, watching how all the others behaved, getting a job at Belden College.
It wasn’t long until he saw how divided those people with powers were on the issue of whether to “come out.” And there, he saw his opportunity. He wanted powers to be kept secret, and with his position, he could influence others to think the same way he did. He became an avid opponent of Revelation, though his position was often challenged because none of his co-workers or students knew he had powers himself, so it was believed to be none of his business. Still, his influence grew, and though he was an outsider, he became a permanent part of the town when he married and his daughter was born.
He thought he could be happy in Summerwald with his wife and daughter, but when he told his wife about his power, and that their daughter might have the same one, she left them. Calvin didn’t let her departure ruin him, but it did scar him, and it confirmed his worst fears about what others would think of him and Emmalise. He became a deeply caring and protective father, and even more opposed to anyone finding out about powers, especially his. They wouldn’t understand, and now he had a daughter to protect from the paranoia of the public.
