a lot of the discourse I’m seeing around the Take Your Pills documentary is bringing up the comparison that some people need glasses/contacts to see properly and no one thinks that’s a problem, which is an excellent point, but i want to bring up another aspect of this analogy
there was a good chunk of time when wearing glasses, even (or especially?) if you didn’t need them, was considered cool. people were just wearing them for the aesthetic, and maybe the additional bonus of being perceived as more intelligent or charismatic/quirky/trendy. no one said “hey, too many people are wearing glasses, everyone needs to stop wearing glasses so much”, and especially not “too many people are getting prescriptions for glasses, they can’t all have bad eyesight”. to be sure, there is a problem with over-diagnosis of adhd in some populations (primarily upper-middle class white people), but there are far more people going untreated than misdiagnosed.
anyway, if you have a legitimate diagnosis for adhd, taking medication that helps re-balance your brain chemistry is no different than wearing special lenses that correct the focus point of your eye, and this kind of scaremongering helps no one
