did... pokémon actually come up with ANY original concepts or was it mostly just, like, ultraman
Like at this point it just feels like any (not immediately animal- or object-based) pokémon I cannot link to a very specific Japanese creature concept is just a pop culture white spot on my part
Not a criticism, just an observation
there is just something deeply charming about the founding pokémon people just grabbing whatever they liked and putting it into the game without a care in the world just like you are supposed to do with your toys "Hey wait here is my favorite obscure B-movie poster or bit of bootleg plastic I have been playing with since I was a toddler" - "great we'll give it stats and you're good to go"
also it's amazing how Bulbapedia, like, never even aknowledges it

Recently I found this kaiju from Ultraman called Takkong, and is very funny how much it resembles Pokemon’s Golem.
Knowing how much kaijus are a main inspiration for Pokémon is most likely not a coincidence.
