The Smiling Man -Artie Staggs "the funniest man in La-La Land" was a popular night club comedian in L.A. during the 1940's. His act was noticed by television producer Raymond Saylor. Artie was offered the oppurtunity of a lifetime hosting WKLA's late night comedy hour "The Last Laugh". The show premiered April 1st of 1952 and was an overnight success. Artie was well liked by everyone in tinsel town, however, most would do anything for a shot at stardom. Rival comedians and a bitter ex wife launched a smear campaign selling stories to tell-all-tabloids. The stories were tawdry fodder to sell papers but none were substantiated by fact. Their plans to hitch a ride on Arties star backfired.
"The Last Laugh" was cancelled after only 4 episodes and Artie was devastated. Near penniless and ruined by scandal Artie checked into the Knickerbocker Hotel July 6th of 1952 . Late that evening a crash was heard from the hotel lobby by the desk clerk Rex Boroson. It was discovered that Artie Staggs had jumped from the window of his 11th floor room to the street below. A close friend, unfazed by the rumors, identified the body and paid for Artie's cremation. His ashes were scattered near his hometown in Indiana.
However that wasn't the last punchline for Artie Staggs, a mystery that became the stuff of Hollywood legend soon unfolded. Teddy Ferguson, Milford Rammler, Tommy Harris, and Glenn Maverick all comedians involved with the magazine stories were found dead with smiles on their faces. Stranger still, it is said they were discovered in front of their unplugged or smashed in televisions, still playing static with the faint sounds of an echoing laughtrack.
His ex-wife Angelina Martino was found in her penthouse suite (paid for by Staggs' alimony) after a wellness check by LAPD. The scene was so gruesome it was thought to be an attempted Black Dahlia copy cat. Angelina's mouth had been split ear to ear, fashioning a crude smile carved into her face. Angelina never identified her attacker, due to a hysterical nervous break down she never stopped laughing. Angelina lost everything her stunning good looks and her mind. According to some, her television was also on...the screen filled with static... with the faint sound of a laugh track. Though all the episodes of "The Last Laugh" have been lost with time the tragic tale of Artie Staggs is still remembered today. Laughter may be the best medicine but sometimes its a bitter pill to swallow.
