Transformers Skybound #30 spoilers below cut
I procrastinated making this one because I needed to organize my thoughts and reread Elita's past appearances under DWJ's pen. I can't promise I won't be nitpicking, but I'll try not to interpret everything in bad faith.
This sure is a low point in Elita One's existence as a character, maybe the lowest so far? I attribute most of it to Kirkman's favoritism towards Optimus and his shallow character-writing. The concept isn't bad on paper, but goddamn, the execution is a nightmare.
The worst thing this issue spawned was the comments regarding Elita One. Genuinely, how do people say things without realizing the shadow of misogyny is looming over them? (of course, there are "people" who just hate woman characters in general, but that's a level below.)
Ok, so Shockwave is (in Elita's POV) dead. The Decepticon troops on Cybertron are probably in disarray without a leader. So why does she fail to acknowledge the leader of the Decepticons on Earth right now, with the evil matrix, troops, and energy sources to power them?
You can say she's laser-focused on Cybertron and missing the bigger picture. But IMO this fails to portray her as the utilitarian leader she was introduced as. It made more sense way back then for her to be acting like this... Now, it just makes her seem not aware of her surroundings.
(not saying she needs to be an earth-lover, of course not, but I don't get why she never acknowledges the bigger threats that COULD realistically affect Cybertron in the near future.)
DROP THE PEN, KIRKMAN. DROP IT NOW.
The execution of this. GOD. I don't mind this, on paper, but everything about how this is portrayed irks me so much. I do not like how people say Elita-1 had a "tantrum," because that's infantilizing a female character's genuine feelings... But I can SEE how they got to that conclusion and felt comfortable saying it.
Everything about how this fight is framed works to frame Elita-1 as "irrational" or "emotional." While Optimus stands as the rational male, I don't mind him having a calmer disposition compared to Elita, but the framing never tries to make US feel what ELITA is feeling at that moment and empathize with HER pain. It's all about how violent she's being and how Optimus doesn't want that.
This is NOT sarcasm, but I do NOT understand the purpose of the Carly and Elita-1 comparison here. Besides... yk... Carly is a young girl who has had violent moments triggered by the loss of a loved one? I GUESS?! Arcee also did, but Kirkman forgot about their ACTUAL, PREVIOUSLY ESTABLISHED BOND.
It'd make more sense for a parallel with Spike, considering his father is in the matrix and his general actions throughout the comic, but whatever.
This exchange was probably done with the intention to humanize Elita-1 and elicit an emotional response from the reader.
EWWWWWWWW. EW. EW. EWWWWWWWW. EW. EW. EW. EWWWW... EW.
(Genuinely could not believe my eyes when I saw this panel.)
This is something, I guess.
I do think Kirkman lacks a certain tact when it comes to writing Elita-1. He doesn't have the sensibility to write her like a real person. It is so obvious what side you're supposed to side with, and I hope I am forced to swallow my own words in the next few issues, but I fear what it's to come.
You'd think Hasbro would care a little bit about whatever new designs they present in this comic. I mean, new toys. But holy shit, they do not care.
Not an attack on Dan Mora, but he can't design mechas. It's just painfully boring.
(I don't even think the PRIME title should be given to Elita, because that's an Optimus thing, tied to HIM; in the best scenario, the "-1" in her name should be of equal importance to his "Prime").
I truly fear that in the next few issues... We'll have an Elita-1, I mean PRIME, humiliation ritual, and she'll be forced to say she was wrong and become Earth's number one fan or whatever, and Oplita will be true.
OF COURSE. THE CHERRY ON TOP OF THE SHIT CAKE.
And more unbelievable than that is this laughable selection of characters that are undoubtedly loyal to Optimus and his ideals. Jetfire, I can understand leaving, but Jazz???? This goes against the core of his character, and I hope Kirkman has a good fucking excuse for that.
I assume that now the story will be split between Earth and Cybertron. Fine. BUt the fact that he brought some characters in, like, spent actual pagetime bringing characters in and introducing them to us just so they could LEAVE for Cybertron is just an incredibly hilarious uneconomical form of storytelling. Good lord. Also, this character selection is so bad, Elita should've smitten Dumbercracker after she got the matrix.
