“Missa Pange Lingua” - composed by Josquin des Prez Performed by the Tallis Scholars

This is my favorite setting of the Mass ordinary, and possibly my favorite piece of Renaissance sacred music. It’s a paraphrase Mass*, based on the Pange Lingua Gloriosi plainchant hymn by Thomas Aquinas, which is itself a very famous and beautiful piece of music. 

Kyrie (0:00-2:57)

Gloria (2:58-7:16)

Credo (7:17-14:21)

Sanctus et Benedictus (14:22-22:19)

Agnus Dei (22:20-29:22) (end)

If you don’t have time to listen to a full half-hour Mass, the Kyrie is pretty good all by itself. 

* If you’re not familiar with paraphrase Masses-- it means that this entire half-hour piece of music is composed of pieces of that thirty-second hymn, taken apart and rearranged, elaborated and repeated in all voices.
