Tall Wedding
I have a personal aversion to the strapless princess dress. It isn't flattering on anyone... it's expensive. And if you like burning money, the (often unnecessary) alterations will double the cost of the "great deal" you got on the dress. In short, weddings are a scam.
Biases aside, you're still probably planning a wedding. I can only speak my own experiences about this. I found the entire wedding to be pretty easy and a lot of fun... but I didn't go nuts.
I found a nice restaurant to host the reception and an inexpensive, but awesome venue. That's where most of the money will go. Dress shopping, I called a couple of major department stores, they pulled some dresses in my size. I showed up and went home with a dress 1/8 the cost of a bridal boutique dress. I'm tall and curvy so I went with something less forgiving (which I regretted after a massive pasta dinner the day before), but figure flattering. I think everyone has their own ideas about what a wedding dress should be, but I think it's a great idea to not let a pre-packaged fantasy dictate what your wedding should be like. Talk to your fiance and really hammer out what you both like. What's unique about you as a couple. What do you want to share with your friends. Once you remember it's about the TWO of you, planning is a snap. I will say order shoes online ahead of time, though. Shoe shopping when you have larger feet is painful and that really makes things less complicated (but remember to try them on. I didn't so my shoes were too big. Doh!)
Tall Girl Prom
Hello, tall girls!
I'm obviously no longer in high school, but I am all to happy to think of myself as your time traveling advice machine. Let's talk different prom looks that will make you feel like a super star.
1. It's all about the fit!
Whirling Turban
Princess, vintage sex kitten, or robot space diva? Who cares! The only thing that will make or break your prom look is the fit. An ill fitting dress will make you look awkward. If you insist on shopping non-specialty stores and have enough time, get a dress that's slightly bigger but hits you at your natural waist (not under the boobs) and take it to be altered. Fun fact, the dry cleaners will likely have alteration services.
2. Long or Short?
Mango
If you're uncomfortable with your legs, the short dress that is sexy in the fitting room will not make you happy about 45 minutes into the night. Get a long dress if you feel insecure about your legs. If you think your legs are your greatest asset and will be comfortable all night, go short. This isn't as much about other people's opinions as your own comfort. If you hate wearing shorts every summer, don't buy a short dress. You'll be too uncomfortable to have fun. The same with strapless, backless, or whatever-less. If you're not comfortable in what you're wearing, you won't be confident and you'll tug at your clothes all night. Get something you feel good in and something that fits. Don't let anyone talk you into anything you don't like. Parents included. YOU have to wear it. No one else.
3. Heels or flats?
Heels!

Okay, but if you're really really worried about being taller than your date... DO NOT WORRY ABOUT THAT. Trust me, he's not worried. He'll mostly be thinking about kissing you. Probably more. If you find flats that you like (say a metallic gladiator sandal?), then by all means. If you have big feet like me, start looking online early to give yourself time to find something so you don't get frustrated.

4. LGBT Prom
Obviously, I'm pushing for doing what will make you feel the most comfortable so that you can let loose and have a good time. This is probably the most important event in high school (which you'll unfortunately forget about the moment you start college and move on to bigger fish), but you should honor yourself and what you want. Wear what feels special to you. Be with who you want to be with. If your school is making it difficult for you to express your identity or arrive with a same sex partner, there are several agencies that will help you fight the good fight. The first that springs to mind is the American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU.org).
I'll look into other organizations for another post.*
5. Budget
So you don't have much money and you're "allergic" to thrift stores... Consider adding DIY elements to an inexpensive dress. Not everyone knows how to sew, and prom time may not be the time to experiment. Check out P.S. I Made This and A Pair and A Spare for embellishing ideas. Starting with somethign as simple as this dress, a few sparkles and a glue gun, you'll be amazed at the results.

6. Going Solo
No date, no sweat! You're going to have an amazing time hanging out with friends, dancing, and having the time of your life. If it helps, I didn't have a date either. I had so much fun it hurt! Just go. Take heaps of pictures, and remember that high school will be over soon. Take the good times and remember them well.
These are so funny! Being tall is great, but it doesn't hurt to giggle at the little awkward bits it throws at us. :-)
