South Africa has finally declared menstrual products tax-free! Taxing menstrual products makes them less affordable and accessible, especially for low-income consumers. Many young girls end up missing school because they cannot afford to manage their periods. At last, Malaysia has officially said goodbye to the tax on menstrual hygiene products! Despite being necessities, menstrual products were treated as luxury items in the country and fell in the “beauty and health products” category, so from 2015 until last month they were subject to a 6% goods and services tax. Malaysia recently changed its tax structure, moving to a sales and services tax, which sets taxes at 5-10% for sales of goods and 6% for services; however, the Customs Department site confirms tampons, sanitary pads, and panty liners are now exempt from taxes altogether.
