Instructions for reading Instructions for a Secondhand Heart
Calling all fans of Everything, Everything and All the Bright Places! Have you added Instructions for a Secondhand Heart to your TBR list yet? It’s British author Tamsyn Murray’s new contemporary YA, a novel that’s equal parts sweet and gut-wrenching. In honor of the book being released on December 5th, we’ve put together a few of our own instructions on how to have the best reading experience possible!
1. Prepare to learn about actual hearts.
That’s right—this title’s not just a metaphor! Jonny has spent his days in the hospital hooked up to machines, desperate for a heart transplant. When he does receive one, he must contemplate moving forward with his life while adjusting to the brand-new organ in his body, courtesy of another boy who tragically died. This book takes a realistic and fascinating look at life both before and after a heart transplant—Jonny finally has a future ahead of him, but it’s not all sunshine and rainbows after the complicated operation.
2. Gather supplies to build a brand new ship.
Of course, that future gets even more complicated when Jonny meets Neve, the twin sister of the boy whose heart is beating in his chest. Jonny knows he shouldn’t be interacting with Neve—he’s not supposed to know about his heart’s previous owner, and he’s definitely not supposed to contact the family. But Jonny can’t seem to stay away. Soon, they’ve forged a tentative connection that’s both dangerous and swoony.
3. Bring tissues.
Neve is full of grief at her brother Leo’s death. When he was alive, she always felt inferior to the golden twin of the family. Even worse, Leo died in a moment of sibling rivalry and competition—it may not have been precisely Neve’s fault, but if she hadn’t been so resentful, he might still be there. This book just might make you cry, particularly as Neve grapples with her confusion and anger.
4. Get ready for some seriously flirty texting convos.
The last thing Neve is looking for is a relationship. But when a strange boy named Jonny walks into her life, determined to get to know her, she can’t help but feel drawn to him. Soon, they’re texting each other. At first, their conversations are stilted and tentative. Then friendly and full of inside jokes. And then...something more?
5. Keep an eye out for Jonny’s sketchbook.
Being stuck in a hospital bed for days left Jonny with a lot of time on his hands, which he used to cultivate serious skills as an artist. But you’ll be able to do more than just read about his sketches—they’re included in the book and make him an even more multidimensional character.
6. Prepare yourself for a full day (or night) of reading!
Neve and Jonny share such a strong bond... but can it survive Neve’s grief and the secret Jonny is hiding from her? With all of the emotional and gut-wrenching moments in this book, you won’t be able to put it down! So before you begin, make sure you’ve blocked out enough time to get through it—complete with tea, blankets, candles, or whatever else you might need to start reading and keep on going.
