just a typical day of writing (my job) and writing (university) and writing (silly fanfics)
On a day when you have 10% energy and you give that 10% that’s you giving 100%. Just saying.
Pomodoro technique. 5 minute rule. Discipline. Time blocking. Etc.
If this does not work for your writing either, try the following:
Don’t set a timer—use a stopwatch instead.
Write that dialogue, write that scene, write that paragraph, write that sentence. Fuck chronological order, you can assort the puzzle pieces later when you have collected all of them.
At some point I realised why I have struggled so much with these common methods: My brain doesn't do marathons. My brain does sprints. My brain works better with a detailed task. The more specific, the better. I don’t stop until I’m done. The dopamine I get from this works better than any motivational quote on Pinterest.
Instead of asking how many kilometres you can run in an hour, ask yourself: How long does it take me to run a single kilometer?
Instead of planning to write for an hour every day, ask yourself: How long does it take me to write this scene? To outline this chapter? To brainstorm the next dialogue?
And then: Do it.
(This is for creative stuff or hobbies when you have issues focusing or starting a task. This might not work for everyday errands that are boring to begin with, but you can still try using this method as well).
Sometimes writer’s block is fear. Sometimes you are just scared.
Because it’s been a while. Because putting your thoughts on paper makes it more real. Because you are afraid of what others might think. Because you are afraid of what you might think. Because you are afraid of not living up to certain expectations. Because you are scared of failure after putting lots of work into something.
But you don’t have to be perfect, you just have to be brave.
I miss writing so much :(
this is a reminder that the most productive thing you can do is taking a proper break.
