"Black-backed tanager on papaya"
Oil, wood, 2025
statuette of a draped woman | c. 300-201 BCE | greece, early hellenistic period, tanagran culture
in the michael c. carlos museum
Master of the Griselda Legend, Eunostos of Tanagra, 1490-1499
Maenad in enthusiasmos
I took the liberty to color this drawing in a tanagra polychrome figurine-like style
I think it turned out really cool !! :D
I want to tell a story
Eight years ago, I was at a random thrift store with friends and saw these statues
These are the girls
$27 for the whole lot but I was very broke at the time so I didn’t get them. I’ve been thinking about them ever since
I started doing research maybe five or so years ago and finally discovered what they’re very rare Italian import terracotta statues from the 1940’s and that they tend to go for $300+
I kick myself every day for not buying all three of them
Then I found her for $45
When I tell you I was sO excited to open this package
I found the one with the pointy hat who caught my attention first for about $100 and she’s on her way to me. I can’t wait
The one in the middle is so so rare I’ve never been able to find her anywhere. I’m determined to have the whole set but she’s going to take much longer to find. There’s no list or documentation anywhere that I can find that shows all three or more statues so the only reason I know she exists is because I saw her eight years ago
I will find her
I wanted to celebrate finding and buying two out of three and set the stage in case I find the third one so I can be even more excited to find her

After my first thrift shop find of this Dionysus Ashtray - it seems I've been blessed with great luck in finding more of the same set, including this jar and tea set/table decorations. I'm pretty certain now that the women around him are meant to be his Maenads or women he is trying to bring into the cult. I really recommend going to thrift shops to look for things such as these, you never know what you'll find and also what a steal you'll get on such purchases!
I also found these sizable statues and bought the lot for less than £15! They are, from left to right: Venus/Aphrodite, Goddess of love. Discobolus, a Greek athlete throwing the discus. Asclepius, God of Medicine and healing, the son of Apollo, who became so powerful at healing that he could revive the dead and was struck down by Zeus. And in the back there's Tanagra, a nymph of springs and wells who Hermes and Ares boxed each other over, with Hermes ultimately winning.
