Seijuurouwas pacing the waiting room floor and making nurses and other waitersnervous. Ryuunosuke sighed and reached out on Seijuurou’s next passto catch him by the arm.
“Babe,”he said softly. “Relax. This is the best hospital in the city.She’s going to be fine.”
“Youdon’t know that,” Seijuurou said, but he let Ryuunosuke guide himinto a chair. As soon as his butt touched the fabric, the door openedand a nurse walked in.
“Mikoshiba?”she called. “Any one here for baby Mikoshiba?”
Seijuurouburst to his feet, followed closely by Ryuunosuke. The nurse led themdown the hall through the maternity ward and into the room where Kouwas lying on a bed with Rin at her side, holding a beautiful,red-haired baby. She smiled sleepily at them both, and Ryuunosukestopped short at how beautiful she was.
“Hey,”she said. “Sorry I had to kick you guys out. Wanna meet your son?”
Seijuuroustarted to rush over, but remembered himself and slowed to a morereasonable pace. Rin stepped aside to let him sit next to Kou’sbed and hold his hand out to the baby. Ryuunosuke watched the entirescene unfold, his heart too full to move.
“Ryuu,”Kou said, looking up at him with that look on her face that she onlygot when he was being especially stupid. “Come here and meet thebaby.”
Ryuunosukewalked forward as though in a dream. He stepped up to Kou’sother side and bent down.
Thebaby had his eyes.
Immediately,Ryuunosuke burst into tears. Kou smiled sweetly at him and held thebaby towards him. Ryuunosuke took him in his arms and smiled down athim.
“Hey,little one,” he whispered. “I’m your papa. It’s good tofinally meet you.” He looked up at Seijuurou and Kou, at the loveshe had never thought he would deserve, and smiled wider. “Welcometo the family,” he whispered to the baby.
Thebaby smiled.
