Aw man I just realised, Niraen and Tanlorin kill Tancano, who was Niraen's best friend in her youth. Niraen and Tanlorin then kill Wisteria, who was one of the great loves of Tan's life.

They helped each other to kill the people who were fundamental to their growth into the people they became. Tancano knew Niraen's secret and never treated her as any lesser of different from the other children. He never thought of her as a monster and was happy to be her friend. Wisteria trained Tanlorin, taught them how to be themself and to stop giving a shit what people think of them.

But then Tancano became a vampire and was eating his way through Phaer, and Wisteria revealed herself as a violent supremacist who betrayed and killed the people who trusted her. They grew in ways that could no longer be reconciled with the people that Niraen and Tanlorin cared for and they had to be put down.

Their bond is fed on the blood and bone of people they cared about 🫠
