day #34, trekking day #4
The first night in Namche I couldn't sleep very well, I think it's because of the altitude... But we woke up very early to visit the Sagarmatha National Park - Sagarmatha is the nepali name for Everest, it literally means “head of the world” - from where there is a stunning view on Mount Everest... Unfortunately the sky was still covered with clouds and we couldn't see anything but some eagles flying... :( The rest of the day the weather got even worst: the fog came over and it started snowing a lot... I was scared of being cold for the rest of the trekking so I bought some thermal gear and a polar fleece. I found this shop called Sherpa which sells this brand of incredible good quality, made in Nepal but designed in the US, at a very affordable price. I am very happy of my mountain shopping! And I am reassured I won't be cold...
Anyway, today is already our 4th day of trekking. The fog is still up, and it's quite cold. We leave Namche following a very nice plain path. We cross some little Stupas, many tourists and when the sky opens up some very beautiful views. Our porter, the incredible Chandra, offers to bring also our day packs, but we already feel sorry for him because he is carrying our big backpack with our sleeping bags and everything. He is very thin and small, as all Sherpas, but he says he could carry up the mountain even 60kg without any problems! Such a force! The Sherpas are crazy, we sometimes see some of them carrying on their backs some wood plies, furniture or very big stocks of supplies. Our guide explains us some Sherpas can carry up to 120kg, and that they're used exactly as yaks or helicopters by the hotels of the region to bring up everything needed. Reacher hotels use heli transport, middle ranged use yak's caravans, and the cheapest ones use humans... Not so nice to think we're staying in the cheapest guesthouses...
After a couple of hours, we take a rest since our guide says from that point it will only be going up... He was right... The path started going up very hardly, we needed to ascend almost 600m to reach Tangboche at 3800 meters. The weather got worst and started raining, yay! I was sweating like crazy and started feeling very tired, and at the same time a cold wind was blowing and I didn't know if I felt hot or cold... But by the way the atmosphere was really cool, after walking in an almost desert area, we were now immersed in a Rododhendron forest, the national flower of Nepal. The trees were colored in pink and perfumed, and this nice environments made me forget I was almost going to die…! At every turn I was hoping the village was there, but it wasn't...
We finally reached Tangboche at around 1pm, after exactly 4 hours walk, 2 hours in advance on our program! We were proud of it and the guide said we could reach Everest Base Camp in only 4 days, but we will take things slowly and enjoy our trip :) Our hotel is again very nice, I am exhausted when we check in but we decide not to sleep already not to have problems during the night. We go out visiting the Tibetan monastery and the village. We find a really nice bakery, the highest bakery of the world! There, where we give us some pleasure with some cinnamon rolls and apple pies, sooooo nice! Matteo and Beppe try to find a ball to play some football, but they fail in their goal. We spend then the rest of the afternoon playing cards, the same way we did yesterday, and the day before, and probably the following days... I really hope the weather will get better because we're bored of this rain!!
