I learn something new and awful about the British every day
Tibet: A Pilgrimage
Just saw a video online saying that no one should be climbing Everest and that all the stuck climbers should be abandoned and no one should help them because no one should be climbing Everest and here's the really fun fact about this:
No one is currently climbing Everest.
None of the people who were trapped in the blizzard of October 3-4 were climbers. They were tourists from China, Tibet, and other regions who were hiking during China's Golden Week celebrations because A) They had a week off, let's go look at some mountains, and B) early October is actually supposed to be relatively decent weather in that part of the world. This is not the classic Everest Special, with your line of foreign tourists in down suits cluttering up the slopes with oxygen bottles, poop, and dead bodies. Some of the people who were stuck were literally just herding yaks. Because that's where the yaks live. They were relatively local, on vacation (or not, if you're a yak herder), doing the shit they would usually do this time of year, and freak weather hit. Which I think all of us have noticed the freak weather has been doing more and more this year. This is not a "should've known better" moment. This is a "Well, shit, didn't see that coming" moment.
But people are running around making videos about why we shouldn't save the Everest Climbers anyway (sidenote: they're all saved already -- one guy was on a side climb and didn't make it, but everyone else was rescued) because people saw the purposely inaccurate headlines (who even knows where the Karma Valley is? Just put Everest) and then decided they knew what was happening without actually reading the articles. And then they made a video, and someone else saw the video and stitched the video, and other people saw the video, and now Outside Magazine has to explain this shit to you, except how many people are actually going to read that one, either? I did, obviously, but A) I read Outside frequently anyway, and B) I actually read the other articles that came out at the time, because I know enough about Everest and climbing in general to know that you're not gonna have 1,000 people climbing Everest in the summer season, and definitely not in October, so I knew that shit was misleading in the first place. (Also, C) -- FUCKING PAYWALL! I put it on Internet Archive but it's not showing yet; maybe give it a couple and see if it gets captured properly).
And so that's how goofy-ass misinformation gets spread. Bad headlines that are meant to get people to read articles wind up triggering underlying biases that lead to assumptions. Assumptions get spread online. People respond to the assumptions and not the truth. Now we have a clusterfuck.
In the meantime, another once-in-a-lifetime storm happens for the tenth time in someone's lifetime.
I don't know if I have a good conclusion to this. Don't share shit without looking it up first. Especially if it conforms to your pre-existing biases.
It upsets me so much that you look at my Everest today and think the name of a coloniser who stole the achievement from a soth asian instead of it's local, well known name Sagarmatha or even the name of the actual south asian person who measured it, the sherpas who took the people there, and the hundreds of people who did the actual survey of the Indian subcontinent
Before moving onwards to the official supplements, let's check out new builds for the GMS frames!
