Apparently in the St Gallen one his feelings toward her were played as sincere, down to him being tender with her surrounding the bite at the ball and helping her stand instead of jerking her around and ignoring her afterward, but instead of feeling duped and used, Sarah’s negative realization was more that *this was all her life would ever be* if she didn’t leave right then, being stuck as his (adored!) consort and never seeing the world.

Yeah, right, I remember that being one of many, many things that put me off about the St Gallen production. :') Someone provided me with detailed overview about it at the time and I could have written a mini rant about every other sentence... I guess, good for St Gallen!Sarah for actively choosing to leave instead of being dragged around (even if we could argue she would be dazed and confused after the whole biting business), but I am just incredibly weary of the old vampire guy being made into a valid love interest for a young woman whose interests clearly are elsewhere.

I know this is a very subjective question, but in terms of modern adaptions of Tanz- Berlin , Hamburg, or Vienna? Is it all about the cast?

Pardon my tired brain, but I’m not sure I understand what you are asking. If you mean to wonder whether the appeal of Tanz these days is in cast members – well, I don’t know, really. I can only speak for myself, and personally I’m much more oriented towards the Finnish and Russian productions. Considering I don’t know that much about the Russian fandom (and I don’t even speak the language!) I can’t give you an informed opinion. But at least with the Finnish fans, I have not perceived that the whole business was about the cast. For one, there is not really a point of reference as far as actors go because we have had only two productions. And I mean, obviously it was a little intense back in the Seinäjoki production days, and the actors and actresses were truly wonderful towards fans who stood night after night at the stage door, but that whole thing was – I think – a lot more about how very special that production was. I mean this in the Finnish standards but in larger Tanz context too, because Seinäjoki did a lot of things very differently compared to earlier productions. As for Helsinki Tanz, it took things to yet another very new direction and cast was almost entirely new, but I can’t deny I really loved how they interacted with the fans and social media.

I haven’t followed the recent German language productions that closely, so I can’t say much about them. Previously, I think there seemed to be a lot of emphasis on certain actors (particularly for Krolock’s role) and sometimes I felt people just wanted the same people starring over and over again. I certainly don’t mind new people taking the roles, because maybe they can breathe some new life into the show, but I think even more important might be if it didn’t follow so closely Cornelius Baltus’ direction. Forgive me if you like it just the way it is, but in my opinion, it has become something of a living fossil.

Anyhow, please excuse me if I’ve understood your question entirely wrong! My brain capabilities are not the best right now. :’)

you know another reason Krolock and Sarah really don’t work as a romantic couple on a textual level? I mean, just take any generic vampire/human romance, and you’ll see all this wangsting about how the vampire is both attracted to their love interest and is also always tempted to eat them. like, it’s pretty much always this big source of angst between the lovers, and there’s all this drama how the vampire must fight their monstrous nature in order to be with the person they love. 

Krolock doesn’t do that. yeah, he pulls away from Sarha in ToFi even though he clearly wants to suck her dry right there. but he’s not refusing because he doesn’t want to eat her -- he just postpones it for the maximum drama before his vampire court. and once he’s done, he just lets her fall on the floor and makes it pretty clear this was the plan all along.

vampire lovers are always concerned about how they are cursed and how their existence is horrific torture, and they would never want to inflict that agony on their love interests. but while Krolock maybe agrees being a vampire is pretty shitty in the end, it doesn’t prevent him from turning Sarah.

that and he’s a 40+ years old man while Sarah is like seventeen.

Good point. Now that I'm thinking of it, I have to say it wouldn't suprrise me. I mean, they did bring new sets and costumes for the revival, so it makes certain sense that they would also do something new with the anniversary. Though maybe they'll want to see first how St. Gallen does and if the audiences like it.

bathwritersnark kindly pointed out to me what I missed in my hasty reaction (tbh I get Kill Bill sirens in my head whenever Twilight is mentioned): by bringing the story into the modern world, the show can parody works that became popular in 00's. and relating to alfredsnightmare's post, it's kind of a logical next step in the evolution of this musical, considering how both the original film and the musical parodied the trends of vampire genre in their own time.
