Respect.!?
Respect, in practice it is used to mean different things by different people. Young adults are presented different uses of this word by teachers, friends, parents and religious figures.
Offbeat begins by asking what use of respect to we mean? Is respect a one directional pedagogic tool, the obedience that the establishment demands, the mode of complacency required for access into a society? Is respect the vernacular tip of the hat, the "chapeau", an acknowledgement of something performed well. Is respect a channel of mutual recognition of value across two parties?
How can respect be conceived of so that it promotes community?
The goal of this project is to establish a common definition of respect between all the participants, one which engenders trust, community and commitment to learning and positive transformation. This definition of respect will be the theme around which we will construct the performance.
