Capuchins’ Kaiser Crypt

Vienna, 2019

I have hundreds of photos of Vienna that I haven’t really even looked at. I was so overwhelmed by Vienna - on top of being injured and extremely medicated and the almost suffocating heat - that I could not even face editing and collating the bulk of the photos. The Kaisergruft defeated me. The Habsburg Death Cult was just so much, and so far beyond anything I had ever experienced, that halfway through I had to sit down and rest and stare into space with an advanced case of Stendhal Syndrome. I still haven’t really got over Vienna - but then, I don’t think one ever does really get over Vienna?

The lighting was poor, my camera inadequate and I was overwhelmed, so I apologise for the heavy editing and poor quality of these photos.

Pancake Angels 2020

Streatham Cemetery and Lambeth Cemetery, Tooting, London 

I’ve become weirdly obsessed with these strange, flat angels. They were incredibly popular in suburban London cemeteries during the 1920s, then seem to have all but vanished.

Most of them are angled to the left with their right arm raised, only a minority look to the right. (Though there are a significant number portrayed centered and face-on.) But all of them have some variation of the same theme - a cross with an angel and a star. Some hold wreathes, some just point, and one has been fancifully modified with a lantern.

Today I discovered a new* cemetery - the Islington and St Pancras Cemeteries in Easy Finchley, London.

*well, new to me - the cemeteries themselves date to the 1850s
