He toured with many big bands and adapted his style as music evolved to bebop with Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. He became Duke Ellington's dancer in the 1960s and worked with him extensively. He created his own signature style of 16th note paddle and roll. He was in the films "No Maps on My Taps", "Tap", and the Broadway musical "Black and Blue".
