Why Don’t Blacks Participate in Nepotism as Much as We Should?
nep·o·tism ˈnepəˌtizəm noun the practice among those with power or influence of favoring relatives or friends, especially by giving them jobs.
I think the answer to this is really simple, and complex at the same time. My grandmother always told me that when I was born, I already had two strikes against me. The first was being black and the second was being a woman! Harsh, but a reality. Black people in general have to work TWICE as hard as their non-black counter parts to be successful. We have to be TWICE as smart, TWICE as pretty, TWICE as funny, etc. For this reason we are hard workers; we work our way to the top, blood, sweat, and tears and we feel so much pride for ourselves, and the thought of just giving away an opportunity to someone we know just because we know them? A joke.
But what we fail to realize is that is exactly why other races come up quicker, and whole lot less stressed out. A white man is less likely to care about how “qualified” another white man is when it comes to providing him with a job opportunity, all he knows is this is a man that looks like him and he does not want this other white man to be sad. We need to start thinking about each other in the same aspect. Now in a perfect world, we would all get grand opportunities based on our merit, and skills, but this is America we have to be savages!!
We always want to make people “work” for things saying stuff like “I had to do this and that to get where I am..”blah blah blah! I’m not talking about giving your cousin $5 on Saturday because he’s broke and he just got paid on Thursday. I’m talking about getting your niece an internship at your firm simply because you know the hiring recruiter, or asking your boss to pull your brother’s application and allow him to skip the interview process. Heck, if you’re the hiring manager..work.your.magic. This is what other races (especially white people) have been doing for hundreds of years! We need to hop on this train and start bringing our people up simply because we can.
