Another late night was spent in a cold, empty bed.
Your mumbled oaths could have put a sailor to shame. Having had enough, you don a robe and slip out, determined to find where your husband is. Sticking to the shadows and sneaking between columns should have been tiring, but you found it thrilling. After thirty minutes of playing the mouse with so many cats, you reach the ornate doors to Egbert's study. Straightening your back, you steel yourself and knock on the door.
There was no response to the first round. You give it another shot.
There was no response in the second round. You start to think something has happened when you hear papers being shuffled.
Egbert was in there. Taking a deep breath, you knock on the door, this time much harder.
"Come in," came the grumpy command.
He seemed to be in a mood, you think to yourself. Putting on the best smile you could muster, you walk into the study, all smiles and cheerfulness.
"Egbert? Can we talk?"
He barely even lifted his head to look at you. "I don’t recall a request from you to meet me."
You hated the way he sounded, all cold and superior. "Well, if you spent less time with your papers and a little more time with me, I wouldn’t have to do something like this."
His head snapped up, and his grey eyes turned to steel in a heartbeat. "I have a duty to my people."
"Just like you have a duty to me," you retort.
"I have a duty to my people," Egbert muttered in biting tones. "They come first in every matter. You have to learn to wait."
"Making your queen make do with the scraps that fall off your table? Oh, your people must be so proud of you."
Egbert could feel his teeth grinding in frustration. Who did you think you were to talk to him like that? "This conversation is over." He picked up his quill and some parchment. "Ulrich! Escort this woman back to her rooms."
Ulrich marching in meant the meeting was over, and you had to leave. "You can’t be bothered to even say my name. Well, that certainly puts me in my place."
Egbert felt a stab of something in his heart. Was it remorse? He shook his head, for remorse was one of the few things he never allowed himself to feel. Still, it kept nagging at him, making him change tack and soften his tone. You’re still his wife after all. "That wasn’t my intention."
"Of course." You didn’t want to create an even bigger scene in front of Ulrich. Not only was he the king’s captain, but he was also the biggest gossip in the kingdom. "I’ll say good night. Your grace."
When the door closed, he tossed his quill aside. Egbert was a man of many things, except when it came to his feelings. He was closed off and called the Ice Shard for a reason. Still, that twinge he felt earlier returned, compelling him to put his work aside for the night. Something about the way you spoke worried him no end.
He needed to talk to you.
⚔ ⚔ ⚔
The book you tried to read gave you no peace. Frustrated, you toss it onto the bedside counter, where a miniature portrait of the king lies.
Selfish, thoughtless boor, you think to yourself. Why I agreed to his proposal I’ll never know.
Frustrated and unable to sleep, you started pacing the room, trying to decide what to do next. Divorce wasn’t allowed by the church, and since your marriage had been consummated, there would be no annulments. Adultery would have cost you your head. You groan when you realize you have only two options. Sneak on to the first available ship heading out, or insist the king and you live separate lives.
No, you thought. No separate lives. I’m a queen, not a nun. My only option is to leave. Asia. Finally, you decide after setting your eyes on some maps. I’ll head towards Asia. Warm weather and a different way of life might do wonders for me.
When the door was pushed open, you knew who it was. "Your grace."
Egbert was stumped when you curtsied. He had been expecting you to give him battle, yet there you were, the very image of genteel breeding and good manners.
Seeing him all scrambled for words gave you an odd sense of power. "Shall I ring for some wine or a meal, your grace?"
"Forget the bloody wine and the food." He snorted. "Just what exactly are you playing at?"
"Nothing, your grace."
"Stop calling me that!" Egbert had gone from cold and sharp to fire and rage itself.
"Well, since you referred to me as a nobody, I thought it best I behave as you see me," you retort.
That twinge in his heart had turned into a deafening roar now. "I--- I---" Egbert was overcome with emotion and wanted to say something he never thought he'd say, but he resisted. "So, you intend on behaving like just another subject?"
"Yes," you said, feeling more defiant than you were. "Until things change between us, that is exactly how I’ll behave. As one of your faceless subjects, nothing more."
You could have sworn you heard Egbert grind his teeth. "Very well." He hissed through his teeth. "Come with me."
"No." You stand your ground, unwilling to go anywhere.
"No?" Egbert strolled up to you, his icy glare on you the entire time. "You dare to say no to your king?"
"Yes." You refuse to be cowed. "I dare say no."
"Really?" He leaned in closer, making you shiver when his warm breath washed over your cheeks. Seeing your lips parted slightly made his blood run warm, and his mind grew foggy. He suddenly felt hungry, but not for food. Egbert found himself wanting you. "You dare to say no to me?"
His voice had grown so low and husky that it made you tremble. "Yes." You gulp this time when his fingers trail down your arm. "So soft," you heard him say under his breath. "Come with me." He cut off your protests by extending a hand. "That’s an order."
Seeing you all ready to defy him again made him chuckle.
"Come. With. Me." Egbert caught you eyeing the side door. "Y/n. I won’t ask again."
You take his hand with a sigh.
⚔ ⚔ ⚔
The two of you ended up in the bedroom.
"Stay here." He said and sat on the edge of the bed.
You stand before him, trying to figure out what he has in mind. A scolding, perhaps? A lecture on why a king’s duty to his people must always come first?
"Why are you so quarrelsome with me?" He asked instead. "I provide you with jewels and fine clothes, I give you a good life, I’m faithful, but that isn't enough for you. Why?"
Egbert looked almost vulnerable just then. "I’m not ungrateful, truly. I-- I would prefer it if you gave me your time instead. I wish you’d show me you cared."
"You know it’s not--" He shook his head and sighed. "And what if I can’t do those things? What then?"
You played the only card you knew you had. "I’ll leave you. For good."
That cut him to the quick. "You can’t leave me!" He roared.
"Why?" You yell back.
Because I love you. The feeling crashed over Egbert with a roar, and he nearly gave into it. "The church will never approve a divorce!"
Nice going, a voice inside his head rang out. Your queen says she's unhappy and wants to leave and the best you could do is bring the church into this.
Egbert never claimed to be a romantic. He could see you weighing what he said.
Because of the church, you thought, and not because he wanted you to stay. "I never mentioned divorce. I said I’d leave, and I've settled on Asia. It would be easy for me to get lost in Asia. Perhaps Ceylon or India? I hear you have no connections in those places." You ignore the derisive snort and press on. "I mean, that is what you want, yes?" You said bitterly. "Me out of your hair?" Your laugh felt bitter against your tongue. "Who knows? Perhaps I'll meet someone who genuinely cares about my needs."
Egbert looked as if he’d been slapped. The thought of you in another man's arms made his blood boil. "You wouldn’t dare."
"That word has gotten tossed around a lot the past few minutes." You said archly.
Despite his glare, his mouth still twitched upwards. "Come closer." It was barely over a whisper, but you go forward anyway. "Closer," he ordered when you were still a good foot away from him.
Butterflies exploded in your stomach when his arms went around your waist, pulling you up to him. "You'll really leave me if things don't change? You'll give yourself to another man?"
For unbeknownst reasons, you find it hard to look into his eyes.
"Look at me."
The order made your eyes snap up to his trembling lips. "Are you really going to leave me? You're going to leave me and give yourself to another?"
Egbert looked so hurt that it made you feel guilty for even thinking of leaving. "You're not leaving me." His breath mingling with yours drowns out anything you have to say. "You're not leaving me." He said again, this time more firmly. "You’re not going anywhere. You’re staying here with me. Is that understood?"
Lips brushing up against yours made you whimper. "But--"
Kiss me, he wanted to say, but the words never left his tongue. "No buts." Egbert’s voice had grown brittle, and his eyes were dark. His fingers trembled when they undid the sash of your robe, and you could only watch as it slipped to the floor. His breath fanning over your skin hammered at your defenses. "I--" You couldn't help but close your eyes when he played with your hair. "I can’t."
When he took your hand and let his tongue run over the bend of your arm, you felt a trickle of heat between your thighs. "You can," Egbert said quietly, his body trembling against yours."You most certainly can."
"Egbert," you said, tilting your head toward him as his lips brushed against yours. "I--"
Kiss me. Show me, I still have a chance. "Yes?" His voice had grown desperate now. When he leaned in again, you closed the distance, your lips needy and hungry. When the two of you clung to each other, it felt like two bodies had melded into one. Egbert’s grip around your waist tightened, his fists bunching up in your hair when you pressed against him. Feeling you melt against him made a tiny chink of ice fall off his heart. Feeling your tongue flick against his made his cock grow hard and strain against his breeches. Egbert no longer wanted to just taste. He wanted to feel. Pulling away suddenly, he grinned triumphantly when you pouted at the abrupt loss of contact. "Kneel."
That single word brought you crashing back to reality. "What?"
A pillow was tossed between his legs. "Kneel, princess." His whisper was hoarse. "Now."
Something in his eyes made you obey and sink to the pillow. Egbert’s gaze was on you the entire time. "These boots have to go."
One boot was peeled off and unceremoniously tossed aside. The other joined it. You look back at him, your palms placed neatly on your lap. Egbert’s breath shuddered as he leaned over and cupped your cheeks. "So good," he murmured before pulling you in for a kiss, a hard one, his tongue slipping past your lips when you gasped. His hands kept you steady even as his lips plundered, leaving you breathless and weak. "You’re not leaving me," Egbert whispered possessively, between kisses. "You’re mine. You’re--"
All I have left of what's good in my life. Egbert wanted to say.
He tried to fight the feelings that bubbled to the surface, but the chinks around his heart kept falling off, piece by piece. Egbert held onto the fraction of control he had left and pulled away, leaving you panting. "Shirt." He muttered to regain his balance.
You hesitated. What was it that he tried to say before that? What was it he struggled so hard to keep buried? "Egbert… about what you were about to sa--"
Your husband simply shook his head, silencing you. He leaned forward and gripped your chin, making you look at him. "Princess. My shirt."
There was that do not disobey me look in his eyes again. You nod and wait till he leaned over, so you can remove his linen shirt. It too joined the boots on the ground. When Egbert sat up straight, your eyes skimmed over the many scars all over his chest. It seemed like a life of violence was all he knew until the crown was placed on his head. It was a part of his life he never talked about, and he always shushed you when you asked.
A thumb grazing your cheek caught your attention. The eyes that bore into yours were no longer like ice. They almost looked like they were melting. Egbert had never looked at you like that before. "Good girl," he murmured and kicked out his legs next. "Breeches."
You gulp but work on the lacings before sliding them off him, stealing quick glances whenever you can. Visions of his cock filling you made you bite your lip in anticipation. Visions of those legs and arms of his entwined with yours as the two of you drifted off to sleep fogged your mind.
Seeing the way you looked at him made Egbert tremble.
"Princess." You snap out of your daydreaming and focus. Something about your eagerness pleased him and made him extend a hand. "Stand."
When you do, he pulls you to him again. "Do you think anyone else can make you feel like this?"
Your knees nearly buckled when a long finger slid inside you. Feeling you all hot and wet already very nearly pushed Egbert over the edge. "Do you think another man could make you tremble like this?" The sounds of you mewling as he fingered you inflamed him even more. "Hmm?" He latched onto your neck with his free hand, squeezing ever so gently. "Answer me, princess."
"No," You closed your eyes and pant when one finger became two, pushing you to your very limits. The way he held your neck, tightening and releasing, made you moan. "No, my lord."
"Good, princess," he said with a grunt, thinking a change of pace was necessary. His body was practically begging for it.
You felt like complaining when those fingers slipped out, leaving you empty. "Don't worry, princess," he grinned wolfishly, licking his fingers to enjoy the taste of you, "I've got something else you'll like."
Without a warning, he hooked his arms around your waist, pulling you onto his lap. "Lift," he ordered. When your arms go up, your nightgown went over your head and onto the ground. Leaning down to distract you with a kiss, Egbert groaned when your arms circled his shoulders and you ground your hips into him. The last of those chinks simply melted and scattered to the wind. His kisses grew hard, painful, his teeth leaving little bruises as they traveled down to your breasts. When you pulled on his hair it made him kiss and nibble harder, sending flashes of both pain and ecstasy washing over you. "I want--" He whispered against his skin. "I want --"
You barely hear him as his kisses drown out your senses. "What?" you breathed. "What do you want?"
Egbert felt like he was being swept away, and he no longer fought it. I love you. That’s what he found himself wanting to say, but was afraid to do so.
"You," he rasped instead, and cursed himself for being weak and cowardly. "I want you."
You take his mouth for another kiss, gasping when he threw you to bed and got on top of you. At that point, words ceased to exist. Your eyes flew open when he pushed his cock in one quick stroke, burying his entire length inside of you. The first thrust left you gasping for breath. Feeling your body empty and then growing full with each thrust sent you careening to the edge of a cliff. Moaning in tandem with him, you grip onto his back for purchase, and you pull him closer so you could feel him. All of him. "Egbert," you whisper in a moan. A trembling hand grasped your neck, squeezing slightly each time your hips bucked into his, drawing out strangled moans every time he went harder, and deeper. When your fingers dug into his skin, Egbert felt his bones turn to water and his breath grow shallow. You wanted this just as much as he did. "Hold on to me," He grunted. "Hold on to me."
You did. You held onto him as he danced you over the edge, crushing your lips with his as your orgasm ripped through you. With a deeply satisfying grunt and one last thrust, Egbert spilled himself inside of you before falling onto his side in exhaustion. Completely satisfied, you curl into him, running your hands over his trembling body just as the clock struck midnight, forcing Egbert to open his eyes. A new day had dawned, bringing with it more duties and responsibilities.
On the final chime, he remembered what you said, about leaving if things stayed as they were. He couldn’t lose you. Humbling himself for the first time in his life, Egbert decided to plead his case.
"Stay. Y/n," You open your eyes to his. "I need you to stay. I’ll do anything you ask. Just please, stay with me."
"But your duties…" You lick your lips nervously, as this was something wholly unexpected from him. "Your duties come first, you said so yourself."
"That’s because I was a fool. A cold, prideful fool. Please say you’ll stay." His smile was so shy and hesitant, his countenance so warm, they appealed to your heart. "I’ll rearrange everything to your liking. My papers, my meetings, everything. I already lost everything else on the way to power. You’re all I have that means anything worthwhile to me, and I can’t lose you too. I love you."
How you wanted to stay, but you were afraid. You were afraid he’ll change his mind and let things slip back to the way they were before. You didn’t have the heart to go through that neglect again, and your silence frightened him. "I beg of you," he implored this time. "Please stay with me. I’ll do all that I can to make things right between us. Please."
Egbert felt his eyes sting. Tears. For the first time since god knows when. "Please stay, y/n. I will change. I swear."
You wanted to say no, that you can’t. Then something fell on your cheek.
It was a tear. His tears. Tears that he was willing to shed for you. It moved you. "Please," He begged.
You were unsure, but your heart listened to your gut, and it was telling you to say yes. Despite everything, Egbert was known to be a man of his word. One chance, you decide. I'll give him one chance. "Yes. I'll stay with you. But one chance only, no more."
"And I plan on making the most of it." Relief washed over him as he kissed your temple and the tip of your nose. He wasn't going to mess this up.
