Notting Hill Sound Systems II—Brian David Stevens
Following on from the 2014 Notting Hill Sound Systems box set, Tartaruga and Brian David Stevens have collaborated on a brand new set of screen prints.
Whilst working on a project on British bass culture, Stevens found himself once again drawn to the monolithic, otherworldly speaker stacks. By focusing equally on the systems covered with tarpaulins, Stevens emphasises the structural mystery of the stacks.
“Normally you never see these streets empty, they’re absolutely packed with people,” Stevens says. “I got down there very early as they were setting up and shot the speakers just in the middle of the street, where they look fantastically beautiful — I think every street corner should have one on them.”
The prints are produced as pairs of images, each featuring a covered/uncovered speaker stack, one as black-on-silver and one as black-on-colour. These, and the book itself, are available to purchase from Tartuga.
