Tokyo Mew Mew Re-Dub Thoughts/Wishes (aka a Fan Cast)
So, I saw a TikTok of the idea of a remake of Inuyasha and a redub since Ranma 1/2 and Urusei Yatsura (which they said Adam McArthur might be a good choice for Inuyasha), and it got me thinking... we need a re-dub of Tokyo Mew Mew.
Like, think like Viz Media's re-dub of Sailor Moon, where we finally got a dub of Sailor Moon Stars, like in the OG Tokyo Mew Mew dub, we never got the second season! There's probably a good chunk of fans of Mew Mew Power (4Kids Dub name) who don't know about it. AND we have HiDive with Tokyo Mew Mew New in recent years, so it did rekindle some interest. So let's be real, at least a third of the anime fanbase as an entire whole are dub watchers.
These are some choices I think could be good voices for the cast. REMEMBER THIS IS ALL IN GOOD FUN, FREE TO ADD YOUR OWN OPINIONS! I JUST DID THIS CAUSE I NEEDED IT OUT OF MY HEAD.
Megan Shipman as Ichigo Momomiya/Mew Ichigo
For Ichigo specifically, I wanna stray away from VAs that are/were already voices of Magical Girl leads, so that takes away Stephanie Sheh (Sailor Moon), Christine Marie Cabanos (Madoka Kaname), Cristina Vee (Marinette/Ladybug), Luci Christian (Princess Tutu), and Monica Rial (Sakura Kinomoto in Clear Card).
Shipman is well known for Anya Forger, La Brava. But I would want her to use her more natural voice instead of the higher pitch she uses for those characters. I think some good comparisons are her role of Sakura Adachi from "Adachi and Shinamura". If you want to hear her more natural voice, which I think is a good mix of upbeat but some panic (specifically good for the cat features moments), try listening to her streams under the name of Eisei Tsukimaru.
Allegra Clark as Minto Aizawa/Mew Mint
For those who are familiar with Allegra Clark's roles, like Maki Zenin, I want to clarify that I want her to actually lean more into the voice she uses for Kasumi Miwa for "Jujutsu Kaisen", and I would like to redirect your attention to Wedding Cake Cookie from the game "Cookie Run Kingdom". The latter has the tone and vibes of regal that Mint has while maintaining a lighter tone in her voice.
A bonus is that she's openly queer, and I think with Mint being coded to be queer in both versions of Tokyo Mew Mew, with her admiration for Zakuro (especially in Tokyo Mew Mew New), it would be nice to have a queer voice actress as well.
Christine Marie Cabanos as Retasu Midorikawa/Mew Lettuce
Just because I said I avoided well-known magical girl VAs for Ichigo does not mean I wasn't going to use them for other characters. When I look at Retasu, I need a voice that could be sweet and timid, but knows when to stand up for herself. Christine Cabanos is just that if you listened to her as Madoka, Sailor Saturn, or even Shiemi Moriyama from Blue Exorcist.
Suzie Yeung as Bu-Ling Huang/Mew Pudding
Okay with Pudding, my requirement I needed her voice actor was to be of Chinese descent and potentially can speak Chinese. If you didn't know or simply forgot, Pudding is canonically ethnically Chinese. Suzie Yeung does fulfill this requirement. Some of her most current roles are Shisui from "Apothecary Diaries" and Ranma (female) from "Ranma 1/2". Both roles give off that childlike energy that Pudding has.
Cristina Vee as Zakuro Fujiwara/Mew Zakuro
....LOOK HERE ME OUT! I get it, she's everywhere already. In fact, she's everywhere in the magical girl community (Ladybug, Sailor Mars, Homura Akemi). But I think she would fit. One of the biggest reasons is because of Tokyo Mew Mew New. In that version, Zakuro is a famous pop singer. If you don't know already, Cristina Vee is a singer in real life, so if they want, they could actually dub some of the singing Zakuro does with Cristina Vee.
Now onto the hard part... the guys.
Kayleigh McKee as Masaya Aoyama
First off, she voices Yuuta Okkotsu in Jujutsu Kaisen, who, in my honest opinion, is just Aoyama in another universe (they're even both voiced by Megumi Ogata). But what I know for sure, Kayleigh McKee can do is differentiate her voice between the voices for Deep Blue. Deep Blue should go into her deeper range, which I think she does very well for her role as Scarab from "Adventure Time: Fionna and Cake".
Austin Tindle as Quiche/Kisshu
Did you guys know that three English voice actors who coincidentally share a lot of roles with Nobuhiko Okamoto (voice in Tokyo Mew Mew New)? Those being Clifford Chaplin (Katsuki Bakugo, Shu Inuzuka, Himmel), Jessie James Grelle (Ichinose, Lear Rinkal, Tomoaki Yamahara, Sukemori Taira), and Austin Tindle (Accelerator, Haeng-dae, Karma Akabane, Obi). I will admit... some of my bias came in this. Quiche was never my favorite character in Tokyo Mew Mew... and sadly both Clifford Chaplin and Jessie James Grelle voice a favorite character of mine (Katsuki Bakugo and Yuuri Katsuki/Ritsuka Uenoyama respectively).
However, Austin Tindle voices a character already that I think has the vibes of Quiche of being charming, unrelenting, and a little bit of a piece of shit. That being Neito Monoma from "My Hero Academia".
Kaiji Tang as Ryou Shirogane
... okay, admittedly, this is kinda a lazy pick. Look, when Tokyo Mew Mew New came out, and I heard Yuichi Nakamura, all I could hear was Gojo from "Jujutsu Kaisen", honestly, blame that voice actor for this pick (joking). Cause if I'm going to associate Shirogane with Gojo, I might as well cast him as Dub Gojo too. But luckily, I think if he leans into his Jinshi from "Apothecary Diaries", this could be good.
J. Micheal Tatum as Keiichiro Akasaka
Admittedly, another kinda lazy pick on my end, but Keiichiro is a hard character to pin down to give a voice outside of the term "proper" to me. He works in Mew Mew Cafe as the main appeal to girls, but is a support character for Shirogane and the science behind the Mew Project. The character that weirdly fit me was J. Michael Tatum, known for voicing characters in this range, like Kyoya from "Ouran High School Host Club" and Sebastian from "Black Butler". Weirdly enough, my second choice for Keiichiro was J. Michael Tatum's partner, Brandon McInnis.
Justin Briner as Taruto
Ironically, this is in the same vein as "sub actor equals dub actor". In Tokyo Mew Mew New, Taruto is voiced by Daiki Yamashita, who is best known for his role as Izuku Midoriya, who is voiced by Justin Briner. But I want to share a character role I think Justin Briner can pull from, which is his role as Hanako from "Toilet-Bound Hanako-kun". Both characters are youthful and tricky types that love to mess with the cast.
Ray Chase as Pie
What I think Ray Chase can bring to this role is the perfect mixture of calculated and serious (look into his role as Neuvillette from "Genshin Impact"), but a type of ruthless and mixture of brotherly love (look into Choso from "Jujutsu Kaisen") that Pie is.
If you're wondering what about Masha... to be honest, I can't think of one. In my head, Masha just has this perfect high-pitched voice that fits the Japanese so well. If anything, I say pull an OG Tokyo Mew Mew and have Masha be voiced by one of the Mews (in the OG, Masha was also voiced by Zakuro's voice actress).
