@tash.aw’s thoughts about my #ChangiAirport Terminal 2 video I posted on my @ambientwalking #YouTube channel is so well thought out and amazingly succinct. Thank you #TashAw! “At the heart of #HemanChong’s show at @stpi_gallery is a giant #QRCode—a banal yet potent symbol of life under covid—that, when scanned, leads to the film Airport Tour. Elsewhere in his wide, varied practice, Chong is overtly engaged in big questions of #decolonisation, the legitimacy of the state and the shifting of world powers, but the film is altogether more intimate and elusive in its aims. Drawn from Chong’s #AmbientWalking series on his YouTube channel, in which the always-invisible artist walks the streets of #Singapore, Airport Tour takes us through the departure hall of the terminal, which is almost completely deserted, before gradually moving onto the food courts and the arrivals level. We peer behind the unmanned check-in desks and wander past the shops familiar to regular travellers to and from Singapore. All of them are closed. The tinkling piano-and-sax music still plays, the digital advertising boards are still lit. Occasionally a worker wanders across our field of vision, sometimes looking at their phone, other times walking with no obvious purpose. Not once does anyone seem to notice us (it doesn’t take us long to feel that we have taken the place of the person holding the camera). It’s almost as if the people we see are phantoms from the past, or figments of our imagination. Or maybe it is the viewer who is the #ghost in this film.” (at STPI - Creative Workshop & Gallery) https://www.instagram.com/p/CShB_h4lJrj/?utm_medium=tumblr
